Prov. 5:1-6

Lesson # Prov. 5:1-6
Study Material - Prov. 5:1-6

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Prov. 5:1-6

1 My son, give attention to my wisdom, Incline your ear to my understanding; 2 That you may observe discretion, And your lips may reserve knowledge. 3 For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, And smoother than oil is her speech; 4 But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword. 5 Her feet go down to death, Her steps lay hold of Sheol. 6 She does not ponder the path of life; Her ways are unstable, she does not know it.

Solomon gives good advice, that we should follow diligently. Give ear to wisdom and understanding. Pay attention. Not only read what is written, not only listen to what is said, but apply your mind and learn. Simply going through the ritual of a Bible study with your mind floating away on other thoughts doesn't do you any good. You miss the entire point of the Bible, and what you miss out on is a loss that will continue for an eternity.

Wisdom, 'chokmah', good sense, skill, wit, all come from Bible doctrine. If you do not learn it, you'll never know it. If you do not concentrate on your Bible study, you'll never learn Bible doctrine. If you do not ponder what you learn, don't memorize verses, think about the lessons being taught, you will never possess the wisdom God has to teach.

Understanding, 'tabuwn', good sense, wit, skill. These all have to do with what you know and over which you have command. With and understanding of doctrine you can see the world for what it really is. You can discern between the moral and the immoral. But more important, what the Bible defines as moral and immoral, not what the world defines. The definitions this world gives us are subject to changes, depending on which way the political wind happens to be blowing. Depending on the petty social attitudes that happen to be embraced at the time.

As public opinion changes so the morals of man change, and generally for convenience or expediency.

Psalm 5 gives us a warning against wickedness. Cautions us against the pitfalls of immorality. Remember that arrogance is the granddaddy of all sin. From it all sins manifest themselves. Whatever sin is thought up in the mind, or acted out, behind it is arrogance.

Pay attention and learn so you can observe discretion and knowledge, 'daath', awareness, recognition, observance, care, comprehension. In this world there are a lot of subtleties. Sure one drink may be fine or perhaps two, but at some point you cross the line between acceptable and not acceptable. Understand where that line is. When you are in control, not infringing on the rights of others, then you are ok. When you cross over the line of self control, when you begin infringing on the rights and privacy of others, then you have crossed over that line and are in the field of wickedness.

The lips of the adulterous are certainly sweet to the lusts of the heart. The adulterous is the one enticing you, tempting you into satisfying your personal desires of lust. And lust comes in many forms. It is not limited to sex. There is money lust, wealth lust, approbation lust, social status lust, power lust, crusader lust. The list can go on and on forever probably.

Smoother than oil is the speech of the wicked. Who is wicked? Not just something ugly and criminal, but most wickedness comes from the pleasant and appealing. 'Join us, do as we do.' The wicked seek to gang up on some victim they have chosen, because the wicked seek company and comfort in their perceived power derived from their exclusive small group of members. But even the members are not safe from the group. Sooner or later they turn on themselves and will self destruct.

They carry a two edged sword. They not only try to cut away at the innocent, but they cut away at themselves simultaneously. They just do not recognize their own self destruction. Their lives are bitterness, never satisfied. The wicked seek to rule over others and control or destroy others at will, but they are in reality destroying themselves. To the victims who happen to be unbelievers, or even believers who happen to be negative toward God, these wicked people are sources of extreme trouble and misery in their lives. But to the believers in Christ who are positive toward God and advancing in their spiritual lives, these wicked people are sources of blessing. And this is rather a contradiction in the motives of the wicked. They seek harm, but God turns it into blessing. So the wicked become disarmed and their objectives are turned against them. The harm they intend for others is turned back on themselves. The positive believers who are the intended targets, receive blessing.

The wicked, the adulteresses, go down to sheol, a reference to the underworld, and a specific reference to the bad portions of the underworld, to death. Death in their lives since they live their lives outside of Bible doctrine, such that their spiritual lives are dead and nonproductive. If unbelievers, then they destiny if Torments. There they await the second and final judgment. If believers, and negative, then their lives gain misery for their company and they eventually go to heaven, but their eternal rewards in heaven, the rewards they might have received if they had advanced in their spiritual lives, will not be given to them. And that is their biggest loss, an eternal one.

We as believers in Christ and advancing to maturity will reap the rewards and spoils of war. In war the losers give all that they own, and the winners divide up the spoils, the wealth the property, the riches that the enemy loses. In this angelic conflict the universe is up for grabs, but the outcome is already certain. Jesus Christ will be the victor and we along with Him will inherit all the spoils. Riches beyond imagination.

The wicked, the adulterous, those who reject God and doctrine, they do not ponder their chosen way of life. They do not think of the path they have chosen or the repercussions of their choices. The simply plow ahead with their eyes closed, stubborn for their destruction they want to inflict on others, in their selfish pursuit for a goal they do not even understand themselves.

So forewarned against the perils of wickedness. Avoid it because it will bring you to an end of misery. You will gain nothing by it. Do not retaliate against the wicked, because God can better deal with these people. Ignore the whispers of the wicked and concentrate on your daily Bible study. In the Bible is far more profit.

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
