7 The fear [yir'ah] of the LORD [Yahovah] is the beginning [re'shiyth] of knowledge [da`ath]: but fools ['eviyl] despise [buwz] wisdom [chokmah] and instruction [muwcar]. KJV-Interlinear
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. ESV
Unfortunately, most Christians lack a deep and abiding reverence and awe, which we call respect, for Christ. For it takes respect which is the basis for the motivation in wanting to learn, which is what our reference to fear, here, is. However, most people play games and pretend, and put on a front for other people to see, but they are not really interested in the genuine functions of the spiritual life. And thus, they become the seed on the path, in the rocks, in the weeds, having no interest in truth or the spiritual life, except for a shallow and superficial front.
Wisdom, is developed from the application and understanding of knowledge.
Knowledge, is acquired from a learning process.
And the learning process occurs, when someone genuinely wants to learn. Which means, that they will make every effort to seek out and learn, because they have decided that Christ, and truth, and doctrine, are a part of a phenomenal life and reality, far and above anything in this world.
And this genuine desire to learn, excludes the pretense of wanting to learn by asking questions, by asking someone else to do things for you, by expecting others to do what you yourself can and should be doing.
The fear of the Lord, is the deepest of reverence and awe, and respect.
And respect demands obedience. And obedience is your compliance with Gods expectations.
Most people think those expectations are simply the attitude of sincerity. However sincerity, most often is nothing more than arrogant phoniness.
And needless to say, anyone who does not toe the line, does not have a genuine desire to learn doctrine, because they are indifferent, or lazy, but more likely they simply do not want to be taught.
This verse makes it very clear, that anyone who has that frame of mind, is a fool.
To despise, means quite simply to lack respect, and not accept or see the importance of God, of Christ, or of the spiritual process of the spiritual life.
Fools, presume that they know, or are opinionated, or are rigid in their thinking, and are not interested in being taught anything. They pretend interest by asking questions that they can easily find out the answers for themselves.
Fools, invent and define their own responsibilities in life, rejecting the responsibilities that God has placed on them. One of those responsibilities, of course is to learn just what the spiritual process is, and obviously to learn what true responsibilities are for this life and the next.
To determine whether you are the wise, or the fool, is as simple as examining your daily Bible study process, or the lack of it. Which are you?
These studies are a part of the massive daily study web site at DailyBibeStudy.Org, and are written, so that you can come to Christ if you have not done so already, and therefore not be lost forever.
