Obadiah 1:21
21 And saviours [yasha] shall come up [alah] on mount [har] Zion [Tsiyown] to judge [shaphat] the mount [har] of Esau [Esav]; and the kingdom [maluwkah] shall be the LORD'S [Yahovah]. KJV-Interlinear 21 The deliverers will ascend Mount Zion To judge the mountain of Esau, And the kingdom will be the LORD'S. NASB
There are two competing mountains in history - Zion and that of Esau. Both are representative of patterns of life.
Zion represents the Word of God, the principles of doctrine, His counsel derived from the scriptures and so forth. Climbing or ascending the mountain (Mt. Zion) is tantamount to advancing in your spiritual life.
The mountain of Esau is representative of the life and beliefs of the world to the exclusion of Gods Word. Although the descendants of Esau lived in Edom, in the rugged mountains of todays southwestern Jordan, and they thought of their homes and fortresses as impregnable, their mountain kingdom was nothing more than dirt and rock. Components of the earth. And, in that they placed their faith and security.'
Rocks have no intelligence. Caves have no power. The soil cannot see, hear, or think in any form, nor even take an action from its own initiative.
Anyone who depends on the energy of their own IQ, of their own talent or ability, of their own effort, of their own hustle, of their own luck, of their own status in life, of their own wit, and so forth - all those who depend on these, are those who will be judged by God and they will lose.
The mountain of Zion will be saved, delivered, rewarded and blessed with the vast power and ability of God.
The mountain of Esau has no power, no resources, no means of doing the same. It will be judged and then lost as though it never existed. Not even a foot print will be left in the dust to memorialize its existence in history. Believers will not do the judging, but their attainment of spiritual maturity (ascending Mt. Zion) will be a testimony to the righteousness and justice of God, which will bring about a just judgment.
Today archeology can dig up the past and study ancient civilizations and speculate how they lived. Often times we romanticize or are in awe as to how peoples of the distant past lived. Though in fact those past peoples more often than not, lived in environments of stupidity as far as the spiritual life goes. And, not just stupidity from ignorance but stupidity from their intentional choice of rejecting God. They ignored God and pursued their own inventions of life. Those past civilizations are all gone now. One day soon there will be nothing to dig up. One day soon (in the millennium and after it in the new universe) God will wipe history clean.
Regardless of what you think in life, God will eventually rule all that is, and those who advance with Him through salvation (faith in Christ) and in their spiritual growth (to maturity), will be the best blessed peoples of all time.
Those who reject God (unbelievers) will have the worst possible destiny in the Lake of Fire. And, those who are saved but are negative toward their spiritual lives, will live in heaven for certain, but all the extras which God has held back for them, they will never see nor receive.
Now think a bit for a moment. Just what is it that we do, that qualifies us for spiritual growth? We all read the Bible and read of God creating the heavens and everything. We read of Cain killing Abel. We read of Abraham and Lot, and Sodom and Gomorrah. We read of Moses and the parting of the Red Sea. We read of David being made king, and Solomon was rich and wise. We read of Elijah calling down fire from the sky, and of Joseph and Mary having a baby in a manger.
We may learn some social skills from Proverbs, but when you analyze that book you'll discover that Proverbs is really a description of your spiritual relationship with God and not with people. Once you become oriented to God, then you can become oriented with yourself and then with other people.
We go to school and learn to read and to add. We learn theories of the arts and economics. We learn of the principles of engineering and so forth. But from the Bible we learn nothing of rocket fuel, nor the proper design of a computer chip or of a really good toaster. We learn nothing from the Bible of the things that make our life functional at work or in the home.
We are constantly faced with the monthly bills, and the pressures of life that come at us from all sides.
Where, in all of this, is the substance of our spiritual growth?
And the answer to all of this is simply, that our spiritual growth is not from the tangible of this world, but from the spiritual. Our growth is accomplished by God in a supernatural way. God builds up levels of spiritual muscle in our soul through His efforts, not from our learning an alphabet or a number system or a mathematical formula.
We merely obey and trust in His ability to accomplish in us that which we cannot do for ourselves. We believe in Christ initially and then we confess regularly in order to live inside the classroom (fellowship) which God has designed for us, then we study and we learn, and we study and we apply what we learn to our daily life, and we study and we do it all over again and again, and God works the magic of the spiritual life inside of us.
And that growth brings to us Gods blessing for the many things we need in this life and especially in the next.
What did we learn in Obadiah? That Esau fathered a nation called Edom and they lived in the mountains and they were jerks more or less. And that they stood by while their brothers in Judah were massacred. And, that in the end, the Edomites finally got their judgment and fell out of history. So how does all of this pay the rent?
Well, to an unbeliever or to out of fellowship believers, then the above paragraph is all they would see. Just a historical record. On such and such a date this or that occurred.
But the positive believer can see through the history and into the principles of the spiritual life which it teaches. Which, in a nut shell is, Esau grew up in a home of doctrine, he left and went out into the world on his own, and he lost out in life. Jacob on the other hand, stayed with doctrine and will end up inheriting everything.
Again, how does this pay the rent?
Well, you learn that your life does not depend on the world but on God. Listen to His teaching and keep on listening to His teaching and God provides the rent money for you. All you are doing really is obediently and faithfully focusing your concentration on God and doctrine and then looking at life through that new set of eyes which God gives you through doctrine.
You discover sooner or later that you really do nothing but abide by His teaching and God does everything for you.
Not to say that you do not have to be responsible in life, because a part of your obedience is being responsible and not frivolous or arbitrary in life. Your first responsibility is to study and grow up spiritually by means of a consistent daily study. Your second line of responsibility is to obey Gods commands. See the check list we put together some time ago. Your third line of responsibility is to your daily duties, whatever they might be. God opens up your eyes and brings the circumstances and the details of your life together so you can make smart decisions and function from day to day.
Esau had every opportunity to be successful in life, and he made the wrong decision to ignore God and the scriptures. He saw no value in reading the scriptures.
You too have every opportunity to have a successful life, both now in this life and in eternity in the next life. You have only to make the right decision, daily, to open up your Bible (in some legitimate Bible study forum - like this study for example) and study, and learn, and grow up spiritually.
God will take care of all of the details of your life and more.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
