Obadiah 1:10-11
10 For thy violence [chamac] against thy brother [ach] Jacob [Ya`aqob] shame [buwshah] shall cover [kacah] thee, and thou shalt be cut off [karath] for ever [owlam]. 11 In the day [yowm] that thou stoodest [amad] on the other side, in the day [yowm] that the strangers [zuwr] carried away captive [shabah] his forces [chayil], and foreigners [nokriy] entered [bow] into his gates [sha`ar], and cast [yadad] lots [gowral] upon Jerusalem [Yaruwshalaim], even thou wast as one [echad] of them. 12 But thou shouldest not have looked [ra'ah] on the day [yowm] of thy brother [ach] in the day [yowm] that he became a stranger [neker]; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced [samach] over the children [ben] of Judah [Yahuwdah] in the day [yowm] of their destruction [abad]; neither shouldest thou have spoken [peh] proudly [gadal] in the day [yowm] of distress [tsarah]. KJV-Interlinear 10 'Because of violence to your brother Jacob, You will be covered with shame, And you will be cut off forever. 11 'On the day that you stood aloof, On the day that strangers carried off his wealth, And foreigners entered his gate And cast lots for Jerusalem You too were as one of them. NASB
Edom consists of the descendants of Esau. Judah is made up of the descendants of Jacob. Both Esau and Jacob were brothers, the sons of Isaac. Though one followed the path of Gods Word (Jacob), and the other (Esau) followed the path which was indifferent toward God, they were still brothers in the human race. Just as you and I are related through Adam.
Of course Adam lived a long time ago - some 6000+ years ago, but you and I are still related in that we are members of the human race. This alone should commit us to being reasonably nice toward each other. And of course we all know a little human history and we know that people are simply not nice toward each other.
Edom stood by, though it did not directly participate in the downfall of Judah, and did nothing. Edom was indifferent. There was nothing in it for them. And so why take unnecessary risks when risks could lead to ones own suffering? Right?
Wrong.
Every human being has a responsibility in some form, to come to the aid of another human being who needs help. In this we have the concepts of charity and charitable giving, concepts of supporting the teaching of Bible doctrine, and the concepts of freedom by means of self sacrifice in war if called upon.
Edom sat on the sidelines and watched the Chaldeans invade and slaughter the people of Judah.
In doing nothing, they are covered with the shame of their lack of consideration. They had the means, but refused to give aid when it was necessary.
Arrogance is selfish and cares nothing for anyone nor anything but itself. Arrogance justifies its indifference. Arrogance justifies its refusal to come to the aid of Judah. After all, 'It's not their fight!'
And for this error in judgment, God will bring His judgment down upon the Edomites. They refused to help, so no one will come to their aid when they find themselves in trouble.
Because of her attitude, because of her violent, hurtful, oppressive cruelty, Edom will become as if it never existed.
Joel 3:19
19 Egypt will become a waste, And Edom will become a desolate wilderness, Because of the violence done to the sons of Judah, In whose land they have shed innocent blood. NASB
When we studied 1, 2, 3 John, we defined violence as any thought, decision, or action which occurs outside of the spiritual life.
There are only two spheres in which you can live - the spiritual life or the evil life. The spiritual life functions only inside of fellowship. Evil is everything which exists outside of the fellowship sphere. You can be the nicest of people, but if you live your life out of fellowship with God, then your presumption in life is that you do not need to comply with Gods advice. Your whole existence is evil and all you do is in direct conflict with God and anyone who is living their spiritual life. And actually anyone who lives outside of fellowship (all unbelievers and all carnal believers) are committing a violence against everyone else, regardless of whether they be carnal or spiritual.
We know that Judah was not on the spiritual uptrend buy were on the spiritual decline. Thus their downfall to Babylon. Still Edom had a responsibility to come to their aid. Edom was evil. Judah was evil. Babylon was evil. God allowed all parties to have their chosen way.
Babylon was aggressive. Judah had become submissive. And, Edom could care less about it all.
Obadiah intentionally spoke of the people of Judah as Edom's 'brother' (descendants of Jacob and Esau) to indicate the awfulness of violence against one's own blood relatives. Likewise, when Judah was being invaded and sacked by the Babylonians, the Persians, and the Greeks, Edom did nothing.
Their indifference was in effect an acceptance of the violence which was brought against Judah.
They were thus guilty of that same violence.
This indifference will be followed by their gloating (an aloof attitude) at the suffering of Judah, followed by their rejoicing over the destruction of Judah, and even by their boasting over the difficulties that Judah was to undergo.
Arrogant people are an evil people. Arrogant people gain pleasure over the suffering of others. This pleasure can come in the form of verbal violence such as gossip or maligning, or other forms of violence against those who would be their target. Arrogant people take pleasure and even rejoice in seeing others suffer. Arrogant people want things their own way, but they do not want to be responsible in life, nor held accountable for their own decisions.
Arrogant people pursue a pattern of violence against others, which (pattern) will be used against themselves sooner or later. In this, they foretell their own destruction. Of course they do not see it until it becomes too late.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
