Obadiah 1:7

7 All the men [enowsh] of thy confederacy [bariyth] have brought [shalach] thee even to the border [gabuwl]: the men [enowsh] that were at peace [shalowm] with thee have deceived [nasha] thee, and prevailed [yakol] against thee; they that eat thy bread [lechem] have laid [suwm] a wound [mazowr] under thee: there is none understanding [tabuwn] in him. KJV-Interlinear

7 'All the men allied with you Will send you forth to the border, And the men at peace with you Will deceive you and overpower you. They who eat your bread Will set an ambush for you. (There is no understanding in him.) NASB

Deceived by her arrogance, and now deceived by her allies. Edom prided herself in having allies and alliances. But the alliances were convenient to the pattern of deceptive interaction that Edom held with her neighbors.

Referred to in the last verse, Edom had not changed since the time of her beginning with Esau. Note the reference to Esau. Esau was the pattern of Edom's existence. Deceptive and greedy and arrogant. Foremost of their flaws was their assumption that they were better than others and that they could withstand anything.

Even in the beginning Esau came home and was hungry. Jacob negotiated with Him, a meal in exchange for his birthright. Esau thought nothing of his agreement, figuring he could renege on it with no repercussions. Thus Esau tried to cheat Jacob, getting both the meal (which he could very well have made for himself), and then keeping his birthright when the time came for Isaac to bless the two sons. Esau thought little of his birthright. Your birthright comes to you in the form of your advancement to spiritual maturity. How much value do you hold for your own future?

Jacob came to Isaac and received his blessing. Esau cried when he discovered he had been left out. So much for the presumptions of Esau.

And so it goes throughout history. People come and go. Life spans are limited. No one who lived 150 years ago or more, are still here. None of them. So why would anyone living today assume an infallible life?

Arrogant people do not make friends, they make arrangements with people. Arrogance engages in nothing which does not benefit itself. In many subtle ways this can be seen in life. Edom was no different. In the fifth century BC, Edom made alliances with its neighbor Judea. The Nabateans won their trust and entered inside of Edom as the Edomites took them in for a banquet. Then the neighbors attacked from without, chasing the Edomites all the way back to their own borders. The Nabateans attacked from inside. Edom fell at the hand of its 'friends.'

Finally in 70 AD Edom disappeared forever.

Likewise in the Tribulation, the Edomites (those living within the similar region) will have some trust from among its neighbors. The deception won't last long as they will be double crossed and annihilated.

Arrogance is the great deceiver and it is also the cause of ones being deceived. Arrogance is a function of the dark side of life. The side that lacks Gods wisdom. The Edomites lacked understanding. Understanding (knowledge of Gods Word) is the only thing which will allow a person to identify the deceptions of life as well as discern between the truths from the lies of life.

Anyone lacking Bible knowledge and spiritual growth will sooner or later become the victim of their own arrogance and of life in general.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
