Obadiah 1:1
1 The vision [chazown] of Obadiah [Obadyah]. Thus saith [amar] the Lord [Adonay] GOD [Yahovih] concerning Edom [Edom]; We have heard [shama] a rumour [shamuw`ah] from the LORD [Yahovah], and an ambassador [tsiyr] is sent [shalach] among the heathen [gowy], Arise [quwm] ye, and let us rise up [quwm] against her in battle [milchamah]. KJV-Interlinear 1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom We have heard a report from the LORD, And an envoy has been sent among the nations saying, 'Arise and let us go against her for battle' NASB
Edom was a nation built in the cliffs of the hills and mountains in the lands southeast of the Dead Sea. It lasted for a very long time. From the time of Jacob and Esau, through the times that the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt, to their exodus into the promised land, through the times of the judges, and then the times of the Kings, through the invasions of the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, and finally the Romans.
For nearly two thousand years the Edomites flourished in their land with their virtually impregnable fortifications, and so they became arrogantly confident that they simply could not be conquered. They were one of the biggest thorns in the side of the Israelites.
Arrogance brings with it certain doom. Despite the many warnings that the Edomites most likely had from other prophets and from the fundamental teaching of the Bible, they as a people ignored the Word of God, and they went even further to harass, intimidate, and bring violence against the people of God (believers).
This opening verse is the vision which Obadiah received from God. A vision is a revelation of information which originates directly from God and is received by the Prophet. He reveals the message which God sent regarding the Edomites, and all that they represent - peoples who are antagonistic against the people of God.
To anyone who brings hatred, violence, lies, attacks in any form, against Gods people, those people will suffer the greatest of judgments. It is true in past history and even in current history, and it is certainly true, or will be true when the Tribulation becomes a reality in the future.
The Edomites were the descendants of Esau, and bound by ties of blood to the Israelites through his brother Jacob, but they had always been their most bitter enemies, Amos 1:11. They are regarded as the type of power of the world which is hostile toward the true chosen people of God, whose end is destruction.
Obadiah acting as the messenger, an ambassador, saw the minister of Gods wrath going forth among the gentile nations to rouse them to war against Edom.
'Arise, and let us go,' is the herald's message, as the ambassador is joining himself with the gentile nations as their leader and comrade in the war of vengeance. Jesus Christ controls history. He does so in three ways.
First, He as God can control history directly - He created the universe.
Second He controls history indirectly through the use of divine principles of doctrine through believers acting in concert and in accordance with Gods will - the due process of law, or war. Believers making decisions and taking actions which are compatible with Gods will.
Third, God controls history by means of His permissive will. He allows the free will function of mankind to operate within the environment of the jungle of this world. He allows evil to function against evil. God allows the jungle to devour itself.
In the case of Edom which is an evil state. God will allow the evil gentile nations to rise up from the power of their own free will and choice, and do battle against Edom - the power which opposes Gods chosen people.
In effect, evil is fighting against itself to the point of its own self destruction. Edom, or the region southeast of the Dead Sea, in the region of todays southern Jordan, will also see destruction by the invading armies of Armageddon. So there are many parallels in history to which this application of Gods judgment will apply.
The specific nation, or geographic region will suffer as well as the evil for which it represents in history. Historically, the nations that had a part in destroying the Edomites included the Nabateans, the Jews (under John Hyrcanus), and the Romans in the first century AD.
In the future this destruction will be evil nation against evil nation. The power of the north against the power of the south, as defined by the powers that will exist in the Tribulation.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
