Leviticus 5:14-19
Lesson # Leviticus 5:14-19
Study Material - Leviticus 5:14-19
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Lev. 5:14-19
14 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 15 'If a person acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally against the Lord's holy things, then he shall bring his guilt offering to the LORD: a ram without defect from the flock, according to your valuation in silver by shekels, in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt offering. 16 And he shall make restitution for that which he has sinned against the holy thing, and shall add to it a fifth part of it, and give it to the priest. The priest shall then make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and it shall be forgiven him. 17 'Now if a person sins and does any of the things which the LORD has commanded not to be done, though he was unaware, still he is guilty, and shall bear his punishment. 18 He is then to bring to the priest a ram without defect from the flock, according to your valuation, for a guilt offering. So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his error in which he sinned unintentionally and did not know it, and it shall be forgiven him. 19 It is a guilt offering; he was certainly guilty before the LORD.'
Just a reminder while we are studying these Levitical sacrifices, the sacrifices are not something that we practice in our current day. They were practiced prior to the Cross and were to have been terminated after the Cross since the true Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, fulfilled all the principles that the animal sacrifices taught.
The Levitical sacrifices were a tool, a teaching aid to give instruction of spiritual principles to people. They were made mandatory then, just as we are mandated to study our scripture daily. The study of Gods word is necessary in order for each one of us to advance in our spiritual life. Without study, without sacrificial ritual (back then), then there is no learning and no advancement in the spiritual life.
We have studied the first portion of the sin offering in the first part of this chapter. That is the offering required for known sins. Now the principle of the fifth part is introduced.
Note too that all sacrifices are toward God, not man. All sin is against God (Psa. 51:4), regardless of whether you have wronged man in any way, all sin is against God, and therefore to God the offering is made, because God is the only source from which one can receive forgiveness.
Here in this passage the sinner causes some infraction. It makes no difference what that infraction is, but that a sin has been committed and is known, or even unknown. If a commits a sin unknowingly, he is still guilty of the sin. Therefore the offering is required on a regular basis because we, especially as young believers, do things that we might not know are wrong. Ignorance is no excuse. You do something because you wanted to do it, and therefore bear the consequences of your actions. To recover from that wrong, known or unknown, the offering is required. Thus in our current day, your fellowship prayer of confession should be done on a regular basis because there are probably things you have done or thought which would get you out of fellowship. A regular fellowship recovery prayer protects you from being out of fellowship for an extended period unknowingly. All sins are forgiven when the sacrifice (fellowship prayer) is performed. See 1 Jn. 1:9, 'He is faithful and just to restore you from 'all' unrighteousness.'
The sinner is required to bring a ram plus one-fifth the value of that ram. So if the ram was worth 100, then the sinner would need to have 20%, or 20, to be added to the offering. The ram is sacrificed to the Lord in proper fashion, which we have already studied. The 20% is to be given to the priest. This then is where the fifth part concept enters into the picture. Five then becomes the number for grace.
Under this sacrifice and offering of money, there is represented the concept of gain. Everyone in grace gains. God sent His Son to the Cross and paid the price for our freedom and salvation. Therefore God is free to forgive sins and to love mankind. God sent His Son to the Cross and by mans free will belief in Christ, God gains back many children. The sinner gains in that the price of salvation is paid by God and through the work of the Cross and Gods freedom to forgive and to take the sinner back into fellowship. The sinner is forgiven. The sinner gains more than he had prior to the sin. He has his fellowship recovered. Remember that this sacrifice is for believers only. This is a part of the confession process we have studied. See verse 5. Unbelievers need to use the first sacrifice indicating salvation. God does not hear the confessions of unbelievers, only from 'family' members. This is a family discipline issue.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
