Leviticus 5:2-3
Lesson # Leviticus 5:2-3
Study Material - Leviticus 5:2-3
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Lev. 5:2-3
2 'Or if a person touches any unclean thing, whether a carcass of an unclean beast, or the carcass of unclean cattle, or a carcass of unclean swarming things, though it is hidden from him, and he is unclean, then he will be guilty. 3 'Or if he touches human uncleanness, of whatever sort his uncleanness may be with which he becomes unclean, and it is hidden from him, and then he comes to know it, he will be guilty.
'If a person..'. It should be clear that the word for person throughout these chapters is 'nephesh', which refers to the soul. It is the soul of the person that is in question here and it is the soul that is at risk.
People consist of three components. Well, believers that is. Unbelievers consist of only two components - the body and soul. But here we are studying the believers responsibility with regard to sin. The believer consists of a body, a soul and a spirit. These are all vessels which contain life in some form.
The body contains biological life. It began with your parents and their passion, out of which you are the result. This is biological life. It is temporary, not permanent. Nothing man can do will ever result in anything eternal. From a single fertilized cell your DNA program exploded into what you are physically today. The biological aspect began when your parents produced their respective components - the egg and the sperm - living cells. They joined in due course and became a fetus - still living cells, only in a more complex nature by the ninth month. But up to this point you are just a biological organism. A growth that your momma is about to get rid of. We call that birth.
At birth something new happens. You receive your first breath of life, 'neshamah', the spark of life, or the breath of life. Here God enters the picture and places human life into a human soul. Now you are two parts - body with its biological life, and a soul with its human life. The soul is the issue in your life, not your body. Your body will one day be discarded - dust to dust. But the soul will continue into eternity, and the question of course it where in eternity will you spend your life - heaven or hell.
'Nephesh', refers to this all important component of your life, the soul, which is your life by the way. The third component, or vessel, is the human spirit which has eternal life imputed into it when you believe in Christ. The spirit does not need saving as it is the result of your soul being saved. But it, the spirit, is necessary for you soul to receive spiritual food, which comes to the soul through the spirit.
So the soul is the target of all sin, and that target is the part that needs healing so to speak. If the soul is damaged then the soul is the component that needs repair. What you think is what you are. Therefore thinking sin and even the subsequent acts of sin are the cause of your souls damage.
Verse one described ones participation in deception, in either withholding truth in a given situation, or refusing to come forward with known facts, in order to achieve some selfish end. Prosecutors can withhold facts in order to gain an unjust conviction. Salesmen can withhold facts in order to gain a sale. Witnesses can refuse to come forward because they do not want to get involved. I'm sure you can think of other scenarios.
Now in verse two we see that coming into contact with unclean things is forbidden. Verse two refers to unclean animals and verse three refers to association with unclean people.
These unclean things generally refer to the details brought out in chapters 11, 13, and 15, but the principle here is association with unclean practices, or patterns of life.
You are what you think, of course, but your thinking depends on whom you associate with. On your own you might run astray in sin and that is association with unclean animals. You may also run with the wrong crowd, and that is association with the wrong people, or unclean people.
Either one is by your own free choice, even if it is a result of peer pressure of some sort. You are a free thinking person, and if your soul is weak due to the lack of Bible doctrine, then you are easily intimidated by others, and even persuaded by others. Others who do not have your best interest in their thoughts.
If you associate or compromise with sin, then you live that pattern of sin, and your are guilty of those sins. You are open to the wide patterns of sin and will fall even further into sin as you react to a sin first, then to subsequent sins. Someone hurts you, and you get angry, then implacable, then revenge and the pattern escalates. You are trapped in your own mental pit.
Sin is the defilement, the unclean object, the rot that you may to choose for from your volition, and it is that which you should learn to avoid. There are no if's. God sees it in your life and you are guilty.
You have a contract. God is the first party, you are the second party, there is a barrier between the two parties - sin. Jesus Christ steps in to mediate and does the work of the contract on the Cross. You sign by faith. God signs by propitiation and expiation. But your life does not end there.
You still live in your biological body with all of its flaws, but that is not your weakness, not your excuse, because it is your soul that sins, not your body. Your soul drives your body, not the reverse. So you are responsible for your violations of the contract. You are guilty.
But God has yet another contract which allows you to clean up your filth, your association with sin. Confession is that contract, and we will see more of it in verse 5. '....he shall confess', a mandatory command. Not optional.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
