Leviticus 4:1-3

Lesson # Leviticus 4:1-3
Study Material - Leviticus 4:1-3

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Lev. 4:1-3

1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 'Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'If a person sins unintentionally in any of the things which the LORD has commanded not to be done, and commits any of them, 3 if the anointed priest sins so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him offer to the LORD a bull without defect as a sin offering for the sin he has committed.

There are yet two more offerings in the series of five which we are currently studying. These last two offerings apply to the believer only and deal with sin in the life of the believer. There are two categories of sin - known sins, that is, you know what the sin is and you commit it anyway, and unknown sins, that is, you commit a sin but you do not know that what you have done is a sin, or perhaps you committed a sin long ago and over time forgot about it. This is normal and common with young believers. But as you learn Bible doctrine, then you become aware of what is and what is not a sin. With this knowledge, you are more cognizant of your life and more alert and able to better avoid the pitfalls of sin in your life.

Once you commit a sin, you are out of fellowship - detached from God - off line as it were, and outside of His sphere of protection. When out of fellowship you are exposed to the jungle rules of life, and those rules never favor you. It is far better to be in fellowship and therefore within the sphere of Gods protection, and blessing.

The method of getting back into fellowship is spelled out in 1 Jn. 1:9, 'If we confess our sins...', and in Lev. 26:40-42, 'If they confess their sins...'. Then God will remember, God will be faithful and just to forgive and to restore.

These passages are the cornerstone for fellowship and the Christian way of life. Without fellowship, there is no growing relationship with God, no spiritual life. An out of fellowship believer lives a life of misery just as any unbeliever would.

Here in this fourth chapter we have the statutes, the offering, that teaches fellowship or rather restoration to it, due to unknown sins, or sins of ignorance, in the life of the believer.

'The Lord spoke...'. When God speaks we should sit up and take notice. God spoke to Moses and continued to speak to Moses. God speaks to you and I today, but not by verbal means. He speaks to us today through our study of His written word. We are commanded to sit up and take notice. Positive believers do this. Negative believers do not. They are in violation of God fundamental command - to study and listen and learn to Hid wisdom.

'If', is optional. You may or may not, but here it refers to the fact that you may sin, and you will sin. So it really means 'when' you sin. We are all born with sin natures. Sin is ingrained in us from birth. We cannot help but sin sooner or later, and we all sin often throughout our life. So 'when' we sin, that is when our 'soul' sins, for it is the soul, that which houses our human life, which commits the sin. Sin is a function of volition. Whether you know, or did not know, what you thought or did was a sin, makes no difference. A wrong is a wrong. Just because you did not know that it was a sin does not make it right. You still decided in your soul to think it or do it whatever the sin was. So you are guilty, even in your ignorance. And guilty means spiritual death and a penalty of sin is on your head.

But we know too, from the previous offerings that someone took our place and paid that debt, therefore that debt is satisfied. Our bonds are thrown off. We are free as it were, because we believed in that person who stood in our place on the Cross and purchased our freedom.

But we remain alive even as free men and we still sin. So what is the issue now. Since sin is paid for are we justified in doing whatever we want? No. Sins were judged on the Cross, but not forgiven, and there is a difference between the two. Judgment freed us from eternal death, but we remain alive and accountable to God, therefore we are subject to discipline for our wrongful conduct if we pursue a life of sin. Therefore the concept of forgiveness arises and that ties directly to fellowship. If we sin, then we are being irresponsible and God disciplines us. As believers we are still in His family, but we are subject to His rules, too. So God commands confession of us, or naming our sins in a grocery list format. And we name them to Him alone. We do not name our sins to anyone else. They are no one else's business. Your sins should not be in the public forum, but should be the private conversation between you and God the Father.

If the priest sinned, then so goes the nation. The priest is responsible for the custody and teaching of Bible doctrine. If there was failure in the priesthood, then the people would not have access to God instructions. So here, is placed on the priest who sins, a special offering to cleans himself from His iniquity.

The bull is offered in behalf of men in high wealth categories or in high offices. The priesthood was to be an office held in high esteem, therefore a bull was required for this offering. To offer anything less would be an insult to God, and even further violation to His commands. Though the priest is but a man and must make offering for his individual sins, he is also in a position of high office, and therefore carries the responsibilities of that office. To whom God gives much, much is expected. Anyone in a high position in life can expect that God will expect more of them in terms of fairness, accountability, responsibility and so forth. When you fail, then God will bring discipline down on you hard, unless of course you recover quickly and keep on the straight and narrow track so to speak.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
