Lev. 2:4
4 'Now when you bring an offering of a grain offering baked in an oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, or unleavened wafers spread with oil.
The Cross has two viewpoints to it. The Godward side and the manward side. The Godward side is that side which is visible to God and not to man. And of course the manward side is that side which is visible to man.. Of course God can see everything, but man can only see that which is visible.
While on the Cross Christ was on there for three hours which were visible to man, or those present at the crucifixion. Then a darkness fell over the hill on which the Cross was standing, a supernatural darkness in which no light penetrated. This last three hours, shrouded in darkness, is the period when Christ was judged while on the Cross and this judgment was not visible to man but to God alone. Neither man nor angel could see the humiliation Jesus suffered through while all of mans sins were poured out on Him and judged. Only His screams were heard from out of the darkness. Christ was very much alive while being judged on the Cross.
The oven represents the Godward side of the Cross. The offering when placed inside the oven was not visible during the baking process. The oven, 'tanner' is a fire pot of sorts which stood on legs off the ground and heated with fire from below. The offering when placed inside the fire pot was hidden from view.
The fire represents Gods judgment of sin against the perfect gift, Jesus Christ, represented by the fine flour as we studied in the last lesson. The oil here takes on a different meaning. Before it stood foe the supporting ministry and indwelling of the Holy Spirit, but oil also has the connotation of appointment or an anointing.
Christ was appointed to the Cross. In eternity there was an election and Jesus Christ as God since eternity past was elected to go to the Cross for mankind. He was appointed to this end and this was the sole purpose for His incarnation at His first advent. He did not come into the world to love everyone, nor even teach love, but rather to go to the Cross and purchase mans freedom from sin and death.
Note also, the man did not climb into the oven with the offering. Man had no part in the offering, no part in the salvation which God provided by means of His work on the Cross.
The offering was to be made without leaven. Leaven is anything that promotes or induces fermentation within the food product. Leaven represents sin or evil. Jesus lived a life free of leaven, free of sin, therefore the offering represents sinless state of Jesus Christ.
Leaven also represents apostasy, Matt. 13. It represents the fallacy of human viewpoint, Matt. 16. It represents the attack of Satan, Mark 8. It represents the self righteousness of immorality freedoms, 1 Cor. 5. It represents the self righteousness of legalism, Gal. 5.
Therefore the offering had to be free of leaven, or as it is stated - unleavened cakes of the mixture. Christ went to the Cross with the absence of sin, the absence of the sin nature and its by-products - evil, which is the production of the sin nature.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
