Joshua 6:22-27

Lesson # Josh. 6:22-27
Study Material - Josh. 6:22-27

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Josh. 6:22-27

22 And Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, 'Go into the harlot's house and bring the woman and all she has out of there, as you have sworn to her.' 23 So the young men who were spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and her mother and her brothers and all she had; they also brought out all her relatives, and placed them outside the camp of Israel. 24 And they burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD. 25 However, Rahab the harlot and her father's household and all she had, Joshua spared; and she has lived in the midst of Israel to this day, for she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho. 26 Then Joshua made them take an oath at that time, saying, 'Cursed before the LORD is the man who rises up and builds this city Jericho; with the loss of his first-born he shall lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngest son he shall set up its gates.' 27 So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame was in all the land.

The same two spies that Rahab protected, came back to protect her and all her family. Apparently her family believed, at least enough in the threat of the Israelites, to take refuge in Rahab's home. Her home sat on the wall and yet anther miracle is that her home was not destroyed while she and her family were inside, when the walls of the entire city crashed down.

Only after she and her family had been removed from the home was the home then destroyed by fire along with everything else in the city.

Rahab was camped outside the Israelite camp at least initially, but later admitted within the camp as one of their own. She married Salmon, a prince of the tribe of Judah. She had a son Boaz and was therefore included in the ancestral line of David, as well as Jesus Christ. Some commentators suggest that Salmon was one of the spies, though this is not documented, it seems only reasonable. Would make a good movie plot though.

So this concludes the first engagement in the war of the promised land. Evil was crushed thoroughly. News went out quickly. The reputation of Joshua was spread far and wide.

Note, that people should have been focusing on the reputation of God, but they instead focused on the man, Joshua. Either way, God wins, because the name of the savior will be Joshua (the Hebrew word), or as we know it, Jesus (the Greek equivalent word). Joshua's original name was Hoshea meaning 'salvation.' Moses changed his name to Joshua in Num. 13, meaning, 'the Lord saves.' So in a round about way, Gods personal name and reference to God is made known throughout all the land.

Out of the ashes, Rahab was saved. A woman of poor reputation, believed in Christ, and was elevated to a high position in the line of Christ. Her family was saved as well. We can only suppose that others had the opportunity to hide in her home, but probably scoffed at the idea. Their decision resulted in their conversion to ashes.

In most everything in life we have absolutely no control. We do have control over our own thoughts and decisions, however. If we make good decisions, then we have more options in life, therefore more opportunities. If we make bad decisions, then we limit our options and opportunities. This is true in life here on earth, but also, the impact on our eternal destiny is affected. Smart decisions (learning Bible doctrine, growing up in the spiritual life) will give us a great eternity. Eternity is a very long time. Bad decisions will limit your eternal blessings, assuming you have believed in Christ at the very least, or totally eliminate your blessings altogether for those who have rejected Christ.

Throughout life we can see examples of the results of our choices. We can read history giving us examples of the results of choices. Jericho is an excellent example, but closer to home there are those who drop out of school, don't get an education and end up in the poorer jobs. The list of examples of good and bad decisions in life obviously can be a very long one. You can certainly make up your own list. Then apply that principle to the spiritual life. The spiritual life has by far a greater impact on ones life than anything else. Our physical life is limited to this life. Our spiritual life is of course has infinite repercussions.

So we do not stand on the wall of life, indecisively watching the obvious answer to our life, march by. We become proactive in the final results of our destiny, by making the right decisions daily, in carrying out our Bible study.

I think we will leave Joshua on this good note and move on to another great woman, Ruth. It is a short book, so we'll complete it before continuing in the Psalms.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
