You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Josh. 6:6-11
6 So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, 'Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests carry seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD.' 7 Then he said to the people, 'Go forward, and march around the city, and let the armed men go on before the ark of the LORD.' 8 And it was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the LORD went forward and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them. 9 And the armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard came after the ark, while they continued to blow the trumpets. 10 But Joshua commanded the people, saying, 'You shall not shout nor let your voice be heard, nor let a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you, 'Shout!' Then you shall shout!' 11 So he had the ark of the LORD taken around the city, circling it once; then they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp.
The stage is set. The orders given. Joshua in turn gives the instructions to the people regarding the circling of the city in silence except for the priests with their victory horns. Those seven priests walking immediately before the Ark of the Covenant, a box containing the three items we have studied before - Aaron's staff that budded (Gods grace), some manna (Gods provision), the Law of Moses (Gods Word). All three far superior to anything that man can offer in life and all three pointing to mans total failure and inability to do for himself that which needs to be done.
Man does not forgive. Man cannot provide for himself. Man cannot originate true wisdom and orientation to life let alone the spiritual realm which man cannot even see apart from the mechanics that God again provides. The spiritual life is not something that is tangible, not something that we can measure with our senses, not something that we can experience in our physical being. Emotion is not a part of the spiritual life other than in our appreciation of those things that we recognize and understand in life. The Israelites remained silent in their procession.
There was no one shouting with joy, 'Amen', no one rolling along the road as though possessed by 'the spirit', no one speaking in gibberish or making gargling sounds as though speaking in tongues (a false application of the concept). Gods instructions were clear. Remain silent. Throughout the march. This is Gods battle, not mans. All who were looking on from within the city of Jericho, and all who were in the hills (those from neighboring cities) observing the actions against Jericho, all attention was directed at the Ark. That was where the only sound was coming from. The sound of the horns, victory horns. The rams horn was used in the announcement of victory or in proclamations. They were not battle horns sounding out signals to the troops to attack or retreat. In the confusion and noise of battle, only horns could be heard and thus the only means of commanding vast armies in the field.
These were not those. These horns were announcing the victory already claimed by God. The battle yet to be fought. Therefore fear was a tool of the destruction of those in Jericho and any out in the hills who might be observing the events now unfolding. There is a lot of psychology in battle. The confidence of one army over another often sways the outcome, resulting in the total demise of the latter at the least cost to the former. The Israelites would lose no fighting men in this battle. The city of Jericho was to be totally destroyed, everyone killed. Their evil so saturated their citizens that there was only one family that would be saved, Rahab and those with her. Lot left Sodom as all others remained, blinded by their lusts and wickedness.
Remember that we have defined evil as the policy of all that is anti-God. The production of evil is therefore called wickedness, or the thoughts, actions of those who are evil. Who is evil? Everyone who is out of fellowship with God. Certainly all unbelievers function in that sphere of evil. That should be obvious. But too, all believers in Christ who are out of fellowship (and we all are out of fellowship from time to time) practice evil, imitating unbelievers in that carnal state (the state of being out of fellowship).
These days we have concepts known as politically correct, or as I call it, inflexible superficial opinionated self righteousness. Hummm, that should cover it. In war we make a big deal about avoiding civilian casualties, while the enemy hides behind skirts and civilians thus placing more of our troops at risk in our attempt to get around the 'innocents'. There is a concept in war that came out of World War II, 'kill everything and God will sort them all out.' On a battle field or in a battle site, usually those who are 'innocent' will be running away, gone, refugees flee the battle and do not hang around just to see what is going to happen. If a church gets bombed, or a hospital, or a home, or some warehouse then that is simply a part of war. The war will end when the enemy is dead or surrenders. And that end is delayed when people look to artificial rules of engagement. The only rule should be destroy everything. You can always rebuild.
So God has given the people of Jericho every opportunity to leave. None did. Rahab was the only one who had made prior arrangement to hide and save her family. That arrangement was kept from the knowledge of the leadership of Jericho. They would have tried to use her as a hostage.
The command was given and the first circling of the city was done. The Israelites went back to their camp. No guards were posted to keep everyone inside the city. They (those in Jericho) all could have left then, or surrendered. They did not. There will be six days of warning, then it will be too late. Six, by the way, is the number for mankind. Adam was created on the sixth day. So in each of our lives we have our six days (the time frame of our physical life as a human, our time on earth apart from recognizing God), then there is the seventh day, that day of judgment whenever it occurs will be the completion of Gods patience with each one of us. Heed the warnings and get with and remain with your daily Bible study. March in silence with the victors. Don't stand, as in the example of Jericho, on the walls watching your time run out.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
