Josh. 3:10
10 And Joshua said, 'By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He will assuredly dispossess from before you the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Hivite, the Perizzite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, and the Jebusite.
The question is, 'I s the Lord with us or not?', Ex. 17:7. The next question, "If God be with us, then who can stand against us?', the earth should tremble at His approach, Psa. 114:7.
Here before the Israelites lies their promised land. God had made that promise centuries before, probably to Shem through Noah, but the promise was documented to Abraham. The Israelites are not yet in that land, the land of promise, the land of milk and honey, of rest, of communion with God, of spiritual maturity.
It, the promised land, is under constant attack, or distraction by evil groups. We have evil groups in our lives, and one by one God will dispose of them as we advance to, and arrive at, our own spiritual maturity.
Here the land is occupied by the descendants of Ham, the son of Noah. Ham had a son named Heth, and from Heth came these races, or tribes as you might call them.
In fact there are exactly seven nations listed - Canaanite, Hittite, Hivite, Perizzite, Girgashite, Amorite, and the Jebusite. These are the direct target of that curse which was pronounced on Ham centuries before.
Ham who was the black son of Noah, had sons of his own, but they were not all black. In fact most of these races were of a lighter skin tone. We aren't too far from the generation of Adam, and if you know anything about genetics, then you know that Adam had all the genes in him for all colors on this planet. Only as many centuries passed, did these colors begin to sort themselves out as peoples tended to marry within their own color. The curse Ham received against his future descendant, Canaan, was not only for the wrong he did to Noah, but more than that, it was for the terrible degeneracy that these descendants would do over the course of time.
They were involved in human sacrifices, crime, corruption, terrible immoralities, and just about everything you can imagine, and probably more. They had run their course and God was about to destroy them. We will see in the future that Joshua will be commanded by God, to destroy every living thing in the land. That includes men, women, children, and even the animals.
In some cases Joshua followed this command, and as a result there was peace because the enemy was totally gone. In other cases Joshua did not follow this command and therefore the seeds of trouble were maintained for future sprouting.
Often times in history there have been instances where the enemy should have been totally destroyed, but bleeding hearts , politicians, weak military people etc. Fail to follow this command and trouble continues. God is gracious to us however and He often will step in and do what man does not, or did not have the backbone or wisdom to do. God will bring earthquakes, diseases, perhaps even allow bad nations to rise up to help in the cleaning process, and so forth, to cleanse that which needs to be cleaned out on this planet. If the world were allowed to build up a huge population of negative people, then sin would run rampant, and the threat to he human race would be high.
These peoples were descended from Ham. They were of mostly light complexion skin tones, but of course there were a mixture of all skin tones living in the land. We know that most of the darker colors went further south into Africa. Anyway, this curse of the Canaanite was not for color. Color should never be an issue since we all carry the genes which came to us from Adam, therefore we carry all the color genes. Obviously after these many thousands of years our genes are mostly of the color that we ourselves are. The remainder of the colors being recessive and not likely to come out in our children.
The issue is their state of soul. And they were degenerate. So bad, that their recovery was not going to happen. Their time was up.
God gives and God takes away. These peoples took something that God gave to another. Arrogance was their first failure, followed by theft of the land. That led to generation after generation of negative volition toward God, and serious distortion of morals, sacrifice rituals (Bible study distorted), idol worship, and so forth.
The Israelites had been in the desert for 40 years. The initial generation was negative and there they died. The subsequent generation was positive, but their experience was mostly book knowledge. Now they needed a real eye opener to instill courage in their souls. The flooding Jordan River would be a good demonstration that God was indeed with them.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
