Josh. 2:22-24

Lesson # Josh. 2:22-24
Study Material - Josh. 2:22-24

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Josh. 2:22-24

22 And they departed and came to the hill country, and remained there for three days until the pursuers returned. Now the pursuers had sought them all along the road, but had not found them. 23 Then the two men returned and came down from the hill country and crossed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they related to him all that had happened to them. 24 And they said to Joshua, 'Surely the LORD has given all the land into our hands, and all the inhabitants of the land, moreover, have melted away before us.'

The two spies went into the hill country while the scouts of Jericho took the easy routes, the main road, in their attempt to find or discover the spies. The men of Jericho apparently never thought to look in the hills for them.

For three days the Israelites remained in the hills hiding from the scouts then returned to their own camp across the Jordan river and reported in to Joshua son of Nun. They related all of their findings and their conclusion. The land is ours for the taking. God has (past tense) already given it into our hands. The people lack courage and live only in their fears.

This conclusion of this chapter brings us to the point of realizing that God has already taken care of us. We merely have to live out our lives and experience life as God intends us to live it. The people of Jericho, and of the land in general were afraid. They neither had the wisdom to surrender or change their ways, not the courage to fight. They remained behind walls made of stone, a material which eventually fails over time.

The Israelites had Bible doctrine in their souls and did not need walls for protection. Bible doctrine in the soul and a fellowship status provides all the strength one will ever need in life. The spies saw the high impenetrable walls. The saw the attitude of the king of Jericho. No doubt they saw some of the military power that was available in the city, but they did not give these details as much importance in their report to Joshua. Son of Nun. Nun stands for the letter 'n' in the Hebrew alphabet, but it also stands for the number 50, with corresponds to the year of Jubilee where the Israelites were to take an entire year off and depend on God alone for their needs.

Here a loud trumpet proclaims liberty throughout the country on the 10 th day of the 7 th month (the Day of Atonement, which also corresponds to the Rapture of the Church ending our Church Age), after the lapse of 7 sabbaths of years = 49 years. Therefore, every 50 th year was to be announced as a jubilee year. All real property automatically reverts to its original owner, and those who, compelled by poverty, had sold themselves as slaves, should regain their liberty.

In addition to this, the Jubilee Year was to be observed after the manner of the sabbatical year, i.e. there should be neither sowing nor reaping nor pruning of vines, and everybody was expected to live on what the fields and the vineyards produced 'of themselves,' and no attempt should be made at storing up the production of the land. Thus there are three distinct factors constituting the essential features of the Jubilee Year: personal liberty, restitution of property, and what we might call the simple life.

Here Joshua's title represents the work of God in the matter of the taking of the land and restoring it to its rightful owners, the Israelites. Those who held the land were not originally entitled to it. The land was promised to the descendants of Shem, not Ham. And the Canaanites were descendants of Ham.

The worldly strengths of the people of Jericho were not considered. God does not depend on human weapons to accomplish His plans, He works without regard to human means. The battle is the Lords! And this is the attitude that will be spoken by David centuries later, but is currently the attitude of Joshua and the peoples of Israel. At least for the moment.

The walls, the battlements, the military of the enemy was irrelevant. The conclusion of the war was already decided as it is in our individual lives. If we stick with our Bible study, then we will be victors in life and in eternity. If we get lazy in our Bible study, skip a day here and there, or get away from it altogether, then problems creep into our lives and we lose out on blessings in time and in eternity.

The spies went into enemy territory and spent three days in possible death, identifying with those who lived in the land, wicked and sinful people. But then after three days they were delivered unharmed back into their own camp, and so the picture of Christ's time in the grave and death in the Cross is illustrated. No matter what your environment, God will deliver the advancing believer. The believer who is advancing in his spiritual life. Nothing can harm you. Nothing can touch you. Even when the world looks for you, it will never find you. So long as you are consistent in your spiritual growth.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
