Josh. 2:17-21

Lesson # Josh. 2:17-21
Study Material - Josh. 2:17-21

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Josh. 2:17-21

17 And the men said to her, 'We shall be free from this oath to you which you have made us swear, 18 unless, when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and gather to yourself into the house your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father's household. 19 And it shall come about that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be free; but anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if a hand is laid on him. 20 But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be free from the oath which you have made us swear.' 21 And she said, 'According to your words, so be it.' So she sent them away, and they departed; and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

Faith without works, or otherwise stated faith without application to ones life, is dead faith, James 2:25-26. The body without the spirit, the human spirit, is a dead body. Rahab could have believed in God and certainly gone to heaven when she eventually died, and ignored these two spies, and ignored helping them when they needed help. She could have looked the other way. Less risky that way. But Rahab had Bible doctrine in her soul and understood the role that God would and does play in her life. She knew the risks and decided that it was better to do the right thing and help the two men, rather than playing it safe and not getting involved. Cowards don't get involved. Fools jump into a situation without thinking. Mature people think and consider the options, take precautions, and trust in God regardless of the outcome.

Whether her role succeeded or failed on her part was of no consequence. She did what was right and placed the outcome in Gods hands. God would bring about the result that He wanted for her individual life, and for human history. Sometimes we do the right thing, but the result is not what we expect. Sometimes the good guys lose at least temporarily, and the bad guys seem to always win, but that too is temporary. In the end, the good guys will always come out on top, and the bad guys end up in the deepest pit absent a bottom.

Rahab was given instructions. Instructions to follow explicitly. No compromises, no modifications. Follow them to the letter or the result will be death. Remain in the house. Designate the house with the correct material. The scarlet cord of threat. No substitutions. No color changes. No material changes, but precisely the material that the two men specified. No conversation with anyone regarding their encounter. That is no discussions with the authorities. She can certainly gather anyone into her house who is interested in living through the coming attack, but that is apparently a very short list.

So it is with our spiritual lives. No substitutions for Bible doctrine. No human philosophy, no idols, no special or sacred things that we as humans define for our convenience. Cain was to offer a specified sacrifice, but he refused and offered his own version. God rejected him. People throughout the ages have tried to define God to something of their own liking, but that too is rejected. Little crosses, beads, trinkets of various sorts will not help you or your spiritual life. So holding up your cross and praying at the top of you lungs, won't help God to hear you any more than simply praying in silence and in fellowship. Actually the latter will work, the former won't.

She was to designate herself and her home with the scarlet material. Believers are distinguished from unbelievers by their human spirit. The spirit which only believers have. Unbelievers do not have a human spirit. The human spirit is regenerated in you when you believe in Christ. Thus you are born again, born into the family of God. Your spirit is the recipient of eternal life, as you human body was the recipient of human life at the point of your physical birth. Both lives come directly from God. Man can only perpetuate biological life, but biological life without human life is dead as well. A human life without the spirit is dead and destined to the lake of fire. The faith learned through Bible study, without application of doctrine to ones life is dead with respect to the spiritual production that God expects from each of us.

None of us are islands in this world. We cannot live in our closet, reading our Bible and expect to grow up. Universities are full of educated people, but they are book smart, and can't apply what they know to everyday life. They are life dumb.

We have our charge from God, and we have the three capital assets that God gave each one of us to invest: time, doctrine, and volition. How we use and invest these assets in our life determines the outcome of our life here on earth, not to mention our life in eternity. We are to follow the rules of worship, of study, of fellowship with God. Rahab was instructed to remain in the house. We are instructed to remain in fellowship with God. That is our residence and place of safety. Outside our homes we are vulnerable. Inside we are protected. So Rahab accepted the four key ingredients expected in the spiritual life. Faith in God, we believe in Jesus Christ, which is one and the same, therefore Rahab was saved. Residence in fellowship, in the place of safety and learning and growth. Consistent study of Gods Word for learning, growth and the construction of a framework of doctrine in the soul. And the last is the application of Bible doctrine in ones life for the furnishing of that home in the soul, for the production of divine works which God recognizes.

To break with any of these is to reject God and His policy for learning and spiritual growth. When we comply with Gods will He is faithful to us in blessing and more. When we violate any of the rules, then God is released from appropriate promises which might apply. If we believe in Christ, then we are in compliance for salvation and we are saved. If we reject Christ, then we are not in accord with the rules of salvation and we go to hell, go straight to hell, no passing go, no collecting $200, etc.

Likewise with Bible study. When we comply we are blessed. When we get away from our study, then things fall apart in our lives as we get caught up in the outside storm of life. Better to remain in fellowship, in that place of refuge and blessing, than to be standing outside under the rule of our sin nature and getting bombarded.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
