Josh. 2:1-2
1 Then Joshua the son of Nun sent two men as spies secretly from Shittim, saying, 'Go, view the land, especially Jericho.' So they went and came into the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lodged there. 2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, 'Behold, men from the sons of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.'
In Numbers, Moses was instructed by God to send out spies to get information about the people in the land. Here Joshua sends out spies, not from instructions, but from a practical point of view. Moses' spies checked out all of the land. Joshua's spies are checking out a specific target, Jericho.
We begin the new life here in this chapter. From Egypt several new lives have been introduced. Egypt was death. The Passover was the grace of God in delivering those who believed. Then the crossing of the Red Sea represents the death of Christ and the deliverance of those who accept Christ. The wandering in the desert represented the challenges we face in organizing our own volition in life either for doctrine or against it. Here we face the entrance into the promised land, the place where we should be living our lives. This anticipated crossing is the believers death to sin and deliverance into the spiritual life while advancing to Gods rest, residence in the promised land. Though even in the promised land, the residence of the spiritual life, there are challenges of spiritual growth in which obedience to doctrine will make you a winner everytime.
Two spies were sent to check out Jericho. By faith they went to do their work, risking their lives. But they were in Gods hands, for they were led to the only positive person in Jericho, Rahab. In the past Rahab had led a life of prostitution, but no longer. She had changed her ways and was on the mend spiritually as well as in her normal everyday life. She had laid stalks of flax to dry out in the sun. Domestic work of a wife. A harlot would never lift a finger to do such domesticated work. So she had turned her life around. But as is the case in this world, she still carries the stigma of her past with her.
The world retains all that is bad and never really lets you get away from your past. Especially if you have been somewhat naughty. God is the only opportunity to get away from a negative past, and since we are all human, we all have bad pasts behind us. We have sin natures. We have sin. Some might be on the lascivious path. Some might be on a self righteous path. Some might be on a criminal path. Which path of sin is of no importance. Sin is sin and death from sin is certain and universal. Man is unforgiving, therefore, in man there is really never any forgiveness. This only comes from God. And more than that, when God forgives, He forgets - permanently. None of this, 'Remember what you have done!', stuff.
God did not bring the two men to a house of ill repute, but brought the two to a home of a positive believer. And therein is safety. In the midst of evil, which is what this world is, and certainly this is what Jericho is, there is a safe haven - Bible doctrine in the soul.
Rumors get around in this world of evil. But rumors do not have the benefit of fact. Only suspicion. Then they run off in all directions searching for the truth to the rumors, but never find what they are seeking. So the search is on for the spies. For forty years in the desert these over two million Israelites were both building their character, getting prepared for the eventual crossing over into the promised land, bleeding out those who were negative toward God despite all the miracles they personally witnessed. And, elsewhere, in the land, the reputation of the Israelites was becoming larger than life. Fear was growing in the city of Jericho as well as elsewhere. Some one saw the spies. Saw them talking to Rahab. Consequently the search was begun as well as the interrogations. Door to door they went searching for the spies.
The king of Jericho knew of the intent of the Israelites to conquer the land, therefore he was interested in finding the spies and stopping them at all costs. But that which God ordains cannot be stopped by anyone. Man has his own plans, but God has superior plans. Man opposes Gods plans even when man knows Gods plan. The people of Jericho could have repented and come out to worship God. They could have come out to welcome and embrace the new occupants of the land, but they resisted. Knowing that across the river were the Israelites. Knowing that their God was a powerful God. That the teaching was that He was the only God. They knew of the miracles for, and the plans for the Israelites. Yet they resisted.
So too we have the challenge in our lives. We can see all around us the miracles of God, the evidence of God, the word of God and what it teaches. Just as some know the dangers of tobacco and resist it to have their smoke, so to people know of the blessings of Bible doctrine yet they resist it to pursue their own chartered course of denial.
Jericho could have given up to the spies, yet they sought their destruction. Jericho was more concerned with keeping what they had, than what they could gain by changing their minds over to Bible doctrine.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
