Josh. 1:16-18
Lesson # Josh. 1:16-18
Study Material - Josh. 1:16-18
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Josh. 1:16-18
16 And they answered Joshua, saying, 'All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you; only may the LORD your God be with you, as He was with Moses. 18 Anyone who rebels against your command and does not obey your words in all that you command him, shall be put to death; only be strong and courageous.'
The officers in verse 10 to whom Joshua was addressing, pledged their allegiance to Joshua and to God. They promised to follow orders to the ends of the earth, no matter how dangerous the mission, they would follow orders without question.
They pledged obedience to Joshua as they had been obedient to Moses. Moreover, they pledged to execute anyone who refused to obey. And they closed their pledge with the phrase, 'only be strong and courageous.', as Joshua was told by God in the early part of this chapter.
Brave words spoken in time of quiet and peace. These peoples were spoken of by Moses as a stiff necked people, rebellious from day one, Deu. 9:24. So their memory was somewhat selective. For the past 40 years the Israelites fought Moses and God. They complained constantly despite that fact that they never raised a crop yet always had more than enough food to eat. They were never without clothes nor shelter. All that was needed was provided. Yet the complaining continued and the rejection of Bible doctrine continued. So the cooperation with Moses as implied was not a reality, but a mere phrase spoken and means rather that the obedience that should have been intended to Moses will be given to Joshua.
It is easy to be brave when there is no pressure at hand. From the comfort of their tents, or from the comfort of your own home life, a person can easily say that he will be obedient and follow orders. But beware of commitments spoken, because they will be put to the test sooner or later.
Being strong and courageous does not rest with spoken words alone, but requires a foundation on which that strength and courage must be supported. Bible doctrine is the foundation as described by God in the earlier part of this chapter. Follow the scriptures to the letter, was the command to Joshua. Go neither to the left or the right. Don't try to make up your own rules as you go along. Don't try to use logic or arbitrary reasoning to justify the things you want to do, but follow Bible doctrine and let God lead you down the correct path.
God never forces anyone in one direction or another, but merely through doctrine sheds light on the path choices ahead and then you choose which way you will go. Without doctrine you have no light and therefore are traveling in the dark. In total darkness you have no way of finding the correct path in life. None of us can find God on our own. Only God can lead us to Himself, and He does so through Christ and doctrine. It is true in what the officers said to Joshua regarding disobedience and death. If one is disobedient to God then a miserable life and a miserable death will follow them. Disobedience comes in many forms, however. This does not merely mean outright antagonism against God, which is certainly being disobedient, but it also includes not even caring for God, or having no interest in God, or being apathetic toward God, or even not making time in ones life for God.
The only way one can be obedient is to have doctrine in their soul. One cannot obey what one does not know. And you cannot know doctrine unless you study you Bible with some degree of consistency. Your knowledge in doctrine is directly proportional to the amount of time you spend in your correct study of doctrine. If you spend little time in Bible study, then you learn little. If you spend a lot of time in Bible study then you learn much more obviously.
But, your spiritual life doesn't stop there. You have to apply doctrine to your daily life and live by what you know. This is the final link in your spiritual life, the productive link which produces spiritual growth, filling up your soul with the good things which the Bible refers to as gold, silver, and precious stones. The furnishings, the decorations of doctrine hung around your neck as it were.
Just as belief in Christ is the key to salvation, fellowship is the key to learning doctrine, so application of doctrine is the key to production in your life. These three factors make up your spiritual life, making you complete, or mature in your spiritual life.
Be strong and courageous, live long and prosper. All these are results of a steady consistent spiritual life.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
