Josh. 1:12-15

Lesson # Josh. 1:12-15
Study Material - Josh. 1:12-15

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Josh. 1:12-15

12 And to the Reubenites and to the Gadites and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said, 13 'Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, 'The LORD your God gives you rest, and will give you this land.' 14 'Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle shall remain in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan, but you shall cross before your brothers in battle array, all your valiant warriors, and shall help them, 15 until the LORD gives your brothers rest, as He gives you, and they also possess the land which the LORD your God is giving them. Then you shall return to your own land, and possess that which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.'

Joshua reminds the three tribes of the Reubenites, the Gadites, and Manasseh, of their promise made in Num. 32:23-25, where they agreed to go out with the other tribes to help them fight for their territories on the other side of the Jordan. Since they had requested the current side of the river as the lands they would like to have.

Joshua also, reminds them of their promise made to Moses, and despite the fact that Moses was now dead, their promise was still binding on them. The promise was in fact made to God, and the lands on which they stood was given to them by God.

Joshua reminds them of their obligation, but their families may remain behind along with their possessions while their men of fighting age, 20 years and up, were to go across the Jordan to fight along side the other tribes until they had received their lands for possession.

Here Joshua portrays several principles of doctrine.

These three tribes had been given a blessing in grace by God. Though they had received their blessing first, they still had obligations to the other tribes. They could not have the attitude of 'we have ours, why should we help others?'. To whom much is given, much is expected.

Just as Joshua was given the power of leadership, so now they had been given their inheritance of lands. But just as Joshua was obligated not to take advantage of his position at the expense of those he ruled, so they were obligated not to become lazy and apathetic towards others who have not been so blessed.

Sometimes people who acquire wealth or title in this world get the attitude that others, not so lucky, exist to further the wealth of the former. And this is a false principle in life. God graces some with much, and many more with far less. Those who are given great wealth are given it so that the freedoms and liberties of the greater masses may be protected, and not taken advantage of. These great riches become the backbones of economies, job pools, venture capitals for delving into the frontiers of opportunity. Unfortunately too few of the very rich realize this principle of life and responsibility. Wealth does not deny one of the advantages of wealth, of the relaxation's and such that it provides, but it does not allow permission to oppress those who are not so lucky in such blessings. Great economies exist when great wealth's exist. Great tyrannies exist when false social concepts of redistribution of wealth exists.

As believers in Christ, and I should say, as advancing believers in our respective lives, we will receive blessings. Along with those blessings come responsibilities to others. We have responsibilities to help others in charity, in Bible study support, in war if called to stop some aggressor. Not all our obligations are so dramatic as an all out war. Often our obligations are quite unseen by others as you open your pocketbook to charity of one sort or another. You have an obligation to your family first of course. Your obligations to others generally come out of your excesses. But you cannot pretend to have no excesses if in fact you do have them. This is the sin of Num. 32:23. The sin of these three tribes that would find them out, if they refused to help others, especially after they have already received their blessings.

Complacency, apathy, selfishness, arrogance are not options in the spiritual life. As God blesses you with more and more, so your heart and gifts to others should increase as well. To lose sight of the source of your blessings, God, is a grave mistake. God can give blessings under any set of circumstances. He can remove them as well.

Bible study in every case should come first and always be first in ones life. The details of life, the blessings, can come and go but doctrine lasts forever, and the rest one receives from it is forever, too. Those with much should lead the battle as these three tribes were to lead the battle in front of the other tribes. Those with blessing lead by example so that others with less spiritual blessing will have an opportunity and a reason to follow. When the task is completed, then God will return all to their rightful homes and in peace.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
