Jonah 2:7-8
7 When my soul [nephesh] fainted [ataph] within me I remembered [zakar] the LORD [Yahovah]: and my prayer [taphillah] came in [bow] unto thee, into thine holy [qodesh] temple [heykal]. 8 They that observe [shamar] lying [shav] vanities [hebel] forsake [azab] their own mercy [checed]. KJV-Interlinear 7 'While I was fainting away, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer came to Thee, Into Thy holy temple. 8 'Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, NASB
Look to God in your life and there you will find life in all of its brilliant definition. Look not to God, that is, look to the carnal things of this life, and you'll find nothing, zip, zero, zilch. Whatever you have or think you have will evaporate before you.
When you are alive, if your are negative, God may demote you during your life, and you will see all that is near and dear to you, vanish right before your eyes. At the end of your life, all you have, will vanish for certain, and as your life will be no more, so your hold on all that you have (or had) will also disappear from your possession. In death you keep nothing.
Others will come along and take whatever you had. They will enjoy your treasures, or squander them. What they do will never be known to you because your life has ended and you will no longer be on this earth.
Ignoring God in your life runs the risk of total failure in life, both now and in eternity.
Isa. 55:3
3 'Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; NASB
Jonah had been negative. He was in a stubborn streak and that very nearly cost him his life and his success in life. But at the very edge of death, and I don't think that a person can come as close and not die, but Jonah thought of God. And he thought of God in the appropriate fashion so that God would hear him, and God did hear his prayer.
What is the proper way to approach God? First one has to be saved. That should be understood. Second, you have to be in fellowship. That is the critical point of a relationship with God. Out of fellowship, then you might as well be talking to the wind. God does not receive prayer from out of fellowship people.
Jonah confessed his sins and was back in fellowship. He prayed to God and did not get himself caught up in the 'poor me' attitudes of life. Jonah did not complain. He did not yell and scream. He did not panic. He did not play the game 'How can a loving God do this?' He did not blame anyone but himself. Jonah took full responsibility for his own actions and he was ready to accept the consequences.
He remembered God. Something that most folks, when they get themselves into trouble, do not do. It is much easier to blame someone, or even blame God. Or, even be petty or insubordinate with God - 'Ok, God. You're right as usual. I am nothing but a loser. Just take me God. I hate this life anyway. You never give me a fair break.' And so on and so forth.
Jonah did none of these.
Jonah contrasts the joy and comfort arising from the mere thought of God, with the miserable fate of idolaters. Anyone who ignores God in their life looks to something else. Most likely it is the details of life that they look to. These things regardless of what they are, are idols. Replacements of God in the life.
You do not have to be bowing down to some sculptured image which you call a god. Your idol can be your life style - your social life, your career, your hobbies, your whatever.
Everyone pursues happiness in their life. Many define happiness in terms of the things in their life, be they things, or pleasures of the senses. But when contrasted to what God can provide, all these things add up to nothing.
Only Bible doctrine in the soul will give you the truest foundation for happiness in your life. Things come and go in life, therefore happiness will come and go with them. But in doctrine there is a stability so great that even when you are tipping on the brink of death, you will still be happy and at peace, in confidence of what God has waiting for you.
Jonah was ready to give up the ghost, so to speak. But then there came along a surprise, a big fish and a big gulp (the original big gulp by the way). Jonah must have been really surprised finding himself inside the belly of the fish. Interesting adventure to say the least. God does have a sense of humor.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
