Jonah 2:5-6
5 The waters [mayim] compassed me about [aphaph], even to the soul [nephesh]: the depth [tahowm] closed me round about [cabab], the weeds [cuwph] were wrapped about [chabash] my head [ro'sh]. 6 I went down [yarad] to the bottoms [qetseb] of the mountains [har]; the earth [erets] with her bars [bariyach] was about me for ever [owlam]: yet hast thou brought up [alah] my life [chay] from corruption [shachath], O LORD [Yahovah] my God [elohiym]. KJV-Interlinear 5 'Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. 6 'I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But Thou hast brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. NASB
Jonah describes his plunge into what he thought was to be his watery grave. Lost in the sea, never to be found or discovered by anyone.
The waters engulfed him with ocean debris, sea weeds and such wrapping themselves around him so as to further constrain him from even swimming to safety.
Jonah was truly in a hopeless situation. All, even the sea, was against him. And there was nothing that he could do. Total helplessness. Totally alone. And since he was drowning and sinking in the waters toward the bottom of the sea, his death was a silent one. He was alone.
This is a story of Jonah. He had his adventures and his mishaps. Being thrown off of the ship was definitely a major mishap. The Bible teaches us spiritual information in the form of stories of Old Testament people and the events that surround their lives. Christ taught in parables, and you can think of the Old Testament as one long series of parables taught one after another. Parables use human experiences to teach us lessons in spiritual phenomena.
In life there are two sides. The temporal side which is the physical world around us or the manward side, and then there is the spiritual side, which is the divine side of life or the Godward side of our life. In order to have a complete life one needs to focus on the spiritual side of ones life first, and then that will in turn complete the temporal side of ones life.
Unfortunately most folks ignore the spiritual side of their life and they focus on their temporal side. Since their temporal side is temporary, then at the end of their physical life here on this earth, they end up with nothing for eternity. Unbelievers lose everything as they plunge into the Lake of Fire. Negative believers will go to heaven, but they will lose their portfolio of super blessings which God has waiting for them and of which they will forfeit because they did not advance in their spiritual life. See our Parables of Christ study.
The sea is like the jungle which overwhelms and eventually strangles the individual. Regardless of the persons status in life, regardless of their financial state, regardless of their achievements in life, sooner or later every person will meet their end face to face. Each living soul will face death, and out of its grasp there is no escape. No human escape, that is.
The world is far more powerful than any one or all of us. Without God in our life, we have no resources or tools to postpone indefinitely, deaths grip on our life.
Jonah was in the water. The ocean waves overwhelmed him quickly and without any remorse whatsoever. The world has no concern for your tears. The sea debris quickly surrounded him with a set of rules and odds which promote and favor death and not life. That is the picture of the world and of the jungle. It cares nothing for your life - nothing.
The Bible is a mirror. It is a mirror into which you can look and see your life with vivid accuracy. Of course you can look into that mirror and ignore the truth as well, but that will be your problem if you do so.
The Bible teaches the truth, shows you where you are in life and teaches you what you must do in order to get your act together and become a spiritual winner rather than a historical loser.
God can and often does, take a person right up to the very brink of death, and you will not know if He will jerk you back into life or just allow you to slip off into the world of the dead.
Jonah had to be taught a lesson. God is the sovereign, not Jonah. Gods wisdom is far superior to that of Jonah. God knows what is necessary in life, not Jonah (or you or me for that matter).
Jonah wanted command of his own life so he ran off. God demonstrates that a simple storm at sea, and the superstitions of the sailors are all that is necessary to end Jonah's life.
By ignoring the Bible, you embrace the world by default and you will always lose.
Jonah used his last conscious thought to appeal to God - in repentance, in humility. Jonah did not learn all of the lessons which God has yet to teach him, but this is a beginning.
Lessons are better learned in settings of prosperity and relative peace in ones life, but sometimes stubbornness and indifference usually take us to extremes before we even begin the learning process.
Forewarned, lest you even think of straying away from a daily study. You alone can make life easier or more difficult on yourself.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
