Jonah 1:17
17 Now the LORD [Yahovah] had prepared [manah] a great [gadowl] fish [dag] to swallow up [bala] Jonah [Yonah]. And Jonah [Yonah] was in the belly [me`ah] of the fish [dag] three [shalowsh] days [yowm] and three [shalowsh] nights [layil]. KJV-Interlinear 17 And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights. NASB
Matt. 12:40
40 for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. NASB
Isa. 53:9
9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth. NASB
Jonah's stay in the belly of the fish is a representation of Christ's stay in the belly of the earth between His death and resurrection.
Christ's body went into the grave, His soul went to Paradise, and His spirit went to the Father in heaven. Split three ways, He then was reunited in His resurrection. The first of many to be resurrected at some point in the future. As of this time, only Christ has been resurrected. We will receive ours at the Rapture.
As Jonah will be in the fish for three days and three nights, so Christ will be in the grave for three days and three nights. I know most folks like to think of the Cross as happening on a Friday (that has been th elong observed tradition), but it is impossible to get three days and nights between Friday and Sunday morning, unless you have an unusual calendar. If you want to keep celebrating the Cross on Friday, then that is perfectly fine too.
By the way this does not mean a fraction of three days and nights, but the full complement of those days and nights. The Crucifixion on the Cross occurred on a Wednesday afternoon just before the beginning of Passover. Recall we studied the Feast of Unleaven Bread (a one day feast celebration) and then the Feast of Passover which immediately follows. That study is found in the Crucifixion study. Look also at the Crucifixion Chronology chart.
Jonah was on the ship. He had been discovered and the secret that only he knew, was discovered by the ships crew of unbelievers (wicked men). Discovered, he was thrown overboard into the stormy sea and to his certain death. Or so he probably thought. But a surprise occurred.
A giant fish was born, or hatched or whatever, at some time in the past. The giant fish (not identified) grew up during its life and was in the right place at the right time at the specific moment that Jonah was thrown into the sea. The fish swallowed Jonah whole. No chewing, no biting, just a quick gulp and down the hatch went Jonah. The fish is not identified as a whale or a large shark or something else. Its type is not important here.
What is important is the timing of everything that came together over a period of possibly many months or even years from Jonah's birth to this moment as well as from the creation of the fish to this point in time.
Jesus Christ controls history.
Jesus Christ controls every aspect of history in the smallest of detail. There is nothing which gets by Christ. There is nothing which Christ might overlook.
There is nothing in your life which Christ does not know about. And, there is nothing in life, in your life, which Christ has not made provision for. It is only up to you to advance in your spiritual life in order to harvest and glean the best of Gods plan for your life.
You can ignore God, be indifferent toward God, not believe in God, be defiant against God, be indignant toward God, and so on and so forth, and your life will be whatever the jungle dishes out to you.
Or ...
You can make things easier on yourself in life and place yourself in complete submission to Gods will (as a wife to a husband by illustration) and then your life will blossom into the greatest adventure beyond anything you can imagine.
Jonah was obstinate and now he is in the belly of a fish. Is that not the greatest place to spend ones time??? Sort of fishy, ... and the smell !!! But then that is exactly where you place yourself in life when you choose to ignore God in your life. If you sit in the yuk long enough then it doesn't bother you.
Jonah could have been in Nineveh teaching and warning of their spiritual doom, and excelling in his spiritual life. But he chose to be stupid and to become food for the fishes. And worse than food, he is in the belly of the fish along with all the other things (yuk) in the belly. Have you ever seen and smelled the contents of your stomach? Try vomiting sometime and then enjoy the wonderful results. Hummm?
Jonah was in the belly for three days ... and ... three nights, just as Christ was in the grave for three days and three nights. Nights run from sunset to sunrise, and days run from sunrise to sunset.
Christ was crucified on Wednesday afternoon before the Passover feast began at sunset on Wednesday. He was buried and in the grave from sunset Wednesday until sunset Thursday (day and night one), then from sunset Thursday until sunset Friday (day and night two), then from sunset Friday until sunset Saturday (day and night three), then sometime (never specified) after sunset on Saturday evening, He arose. He was no longer in the grave when folks came to view the grave on Sunday morning. Remember that the Jewish day runs from sunset until sunset. So Sunday actually begins at sunset on Saturday evening.
While in the belly of the fish, Jonah prayed, but that is another study - the whole of chapter two.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
