Lesson # Joel 1:15-18
Study Material - Joel 1:15-18
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Joel 1:15-18 15 Alas [ahahh] for the day [yowm] ! for the day [yowm] of the LORD [Yahovah] is at hand [qarowb] , and as a destruction [shod] from the Almighty [Shadday] shall it come [bow] . 16 Is not the meat [okel] cut off [karath] before our eyes [ayin] , yea, joy [simchah] and gladness [giyl] from the house [bayith] of our God ['elohiym] ? 17 The seed [parudah] is rotten [abash] under their clods [migraphah] , the garners [owtsar] are laid desolate [shamem] , the barns [mammagurah] are broken down [harac] ; for the corn [dagan] is withered [yabesh] . 18 How do the beasts [bahemah] groan [anach] ! the herds [eder] of cattle [baqar] are perplexed [buwk] , because they have no pasture [mir`eh] ; yea, the flocks [eder] of sheep [tso'n] are made desolate [asham] . KJV-Interlinear 15 Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is near, And it will come as destruction from the Almighty. 16 Has not food been cut off before our eyes, Gladness and joy from the house of our God? 17 The seeds shrivel under their clods; The storehouses are desolate, The barns are torn down, For the grain is dried up. 18 How the beasts groan! The herds of cattle wander aimlessly Because there is no pasture for them; Even the flocks of sheep suffer. NASB
History revolves around mans attitude toward God. A strong attitude for God brings prosperity and many blessings. A negative attitude brings desolation and many miseries.
God is the only source for provision and support for all living things. When man turns his back on his only means of support, then God is a gentleman and withdraws the support which He offers. Man is incapable of supporting himself and therefore disaster strikes.
As long as the defiant attitude toward God continues, then man only brings upon himself more and more, and greater and greater catastrophe.
Anytime in history, when mankind, or rather the majority of humanity, grows negative toward God, then, 'The day of the Lord is at hand.'
Isa. 13:6-9
6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty. 7 Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every man's heart will melt. 8 And they will be terrified, Pains and anguish will take hold of them; They will writhe like a woman in labor, They will look at one another in astonishment, Their faces aflame. 9 Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it. NASB
In human history, the 'Day of the Lord' will occur at the Second Advent. The time of mans maximum defiance toward God. But throughout history there are times when Gods judgment will enter into history to place correction and to redirect mans direction in order to prevent man from prematurely destroying himself.
Even in our individual lives, God enters with warnings and intensified warnings in order to get our attention so that we will stop going in the direction we are going, and return to a study of His Word.
We are given many examples of the destructiveness that awaits us if we continue a pattern of anti-God life styles.
Described in the shortages and in the starvation of the common agriculture animals, the person who lives a life in defiance toward God will sooner or later meet these same shortages within their own life. Their cupboards will empty out. Their ability to earn a living will evaporate. The opportunities for anything good in life will vanish. These are not good things, mind you!
Correction in ones life does not come from some weak hand, but from the arm of the Almighty. Some will ridicule this thought. Some will be indifferent. Some will not be interested simply because the lightning hasn't struck them yet.
They misinterpret the blessing they are receiving by association from the rest of the world or nation or community or family around them. What does that mean? If you live in a prosperous nation, one that is prosperous because there is a high degree of positive attitude toward God, then that means there are jobs and opportunities available to everyone. Even an unbeliever will find some form of prosperity within the nation. But in his personal life, there will be the inevitable problems - social, marital, monthly bills, health issues and so forth. One cannot escape the inevitable discipline or judgment from God because of the environment we live in.
So lightning might not strike in the form of a famine or an invasion, but there are plenty of other tools with which God can deal with individuals. When one is negative within a prosperous nation then there is more opportunity to turn around ones life, than when the nation falls on the rocks leaving huge numbers of people competing for the few crumbs left.
Therefore, the intensified warning from God within these verses. Do not turn your back on God. Do not turn your collective backs (the nation) on God, because none of us can support ourselves, and when God is excluded from the life, then the trouble that will befall us is potentially horrendous.
In the Tribulation, where we have been studying, we have already seen the first four seals broken open on the scrolls. The written record of mans arrogance and mans attempt to run things without God, ends up with one-fourth of the world dying. In our recent study we have seen the two opposing forces at work in history (Satan and God) and their respective policies. Satan is bent on the destruction of humanity, and God is interested in mans deliverance and well being.
In that future time the shortages will not be local, not regional, not even limited to some nation or two, but will be worldwide. The entire world will face the shortages of food, fresh water, will suffer from unprecedented storms and disasters. Many things we take for granted today - power, transportation, food at the nearby stores, will all be disrupted if even available at all.
In the past we know of events in history wherein man has suffered greatly. In the future we know of the events which will lead to unbelievable suffering. So what do we do about it for our current life? We get with a daily Bible study program and we stick to it like it is our last meal on earth. Many times people worry over losing the things they have or want to have, but what they should really worry about is losing access to God - the source of all those things.
End of lesson.
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
