Lesson # Joel 1:8-10
Study Material - Joel 1:8-10
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Joel 1:8-10 8 Lament ['alah] like a virgin [bathuwlah] girded [chagar] with sackcloth [saq] for the husband [ba`al] of her youth [na`uwr] . 9 The meat offering [minchah] and the drink offering [necek] is cut off [karath] from the house [bayith] of the LORD [Yahovah] ; the priests [kohen] , the LORD'S [Yahovah] ministers [sharath] , mourn [abal] . 10 The field [sadeh] is wasted [shadad] , the land [adamah] mourneth [abal] ; for the corn [dagan] is wasted [shadad] : the new wine [tiyrowsh] is dried up [yabesh] , the oil [yitshar] languisheth [amal] . KJV-Interlinear 8 Wail like a virgin girded with sackcloth For the bridegroom of her youth. 9 The grain offering and the libation are cut off From the house of the LORD. The priests mourn, The ministers of the LORD. 10 The field is ruined, The land mourns, For the grain is ruined, The new wine dries up, Fresh oil fails. NASB
The population, the land, the entire nation is referred to in the feminine of, 'wail.' Also the virgin, whether a young and untouched female (an unbeliever losing an opportunity to have a relationship with God), or whether a young woman just married, and therefore just entering her life and marriage in its earliest years (a believer losing a further relationship with God).
When they both lose the love of their life, their partner, their companion, the one to whom they look to for many years of excitement, happiness, and fulfillment. The one with whom they dream of riding off into the sunset and living happily ever after.
When suddenly all their dreams are literally shattered and torn, ripped violently out of their hearts. Then, wail out loud, with deep grieving of one being left alone. Cry as one would when the best hopes and dreams of your life have suddenly been taken from you and you have nothing left. Wail, cry, grieve in your deepest sorrow.
Why? Because you have lost the things you love? No. Because you have lost your family? No. Because your worldly ideas have been shattered? No.
The wailing is not for anything earthly, because anything of this earth can be replaced. Its original source is from God, and God is able to replace anything, and even replace it with better.
So the wailing is not for the loss of 'things.' It is for the loss of the 'source' of those things. God.
When God is ignored, then the nation is left to fend for itself. In fending for itself it is exposed to the terrors of the world without Gods aid. The locusts come along and destroy the economy. Everyone loses everything. Further, since the crops (grain, grapes, and olive oil) have been destroyed that leaves nothing for the priests to offer to God. No prosperity, no production, no gifts of thanks.
We always offer (or we should) our thanks to God for everything we have. When we have nothing, we have nothing to offer. Now, understand that God is not interested in your 'things.' He is not interested in your money you give to Bible study, or charity, or whatever. God is interested in your attitude. And your attitude is reflected in your study, your spiritual growth, your spiritual life as a whole.
A person positive toward God will study diligently and grow, and will give because he wants to give. A person who plays games with God will try to rationalize that he 'wants' to give, but perhaps when he has a little more money, perhaps when the bills are paid, perhaps when times are better. Those events never occur, because it is the soul of the one who is playing the games that is lacking, not the means of giving.
So, what does God do? Since the people did not give, God takes all they have and now they have nothing to give. Their souls were empty, and now their pocketbooks are made the same.
The meat offering and drink offering accompanied the morning and evening sacrifice, and that sacrifice, with its other accompaniments, being an expression of gratitude to God. The meat offering, consisted of flour mingled with oil. The drink offering, consisted of wine. There were now no firstfruits of corn and wine and oil. Now, however, the corn was wasted and the oil languished, and therefore the meat offering had partially failed or entirely ceased. The new wine was dried up.
We are now crying but should not be crying over the 'things' that we have lost (but in reality that is why people actually do cry), but what we should be crying over is the loss of the source of those things - God.
The population is in tears. The priests are in tears. They have nothing with which to offer thanks to God. There is nothing. All things have been destroyed totally by the locusts (the earthly enemies of God). The field is ruined. The land mourns because it is not productive. The production of the land is non-existent.
The land is spiritual growth. The grain, wine, and oil are the production of the spiritual life. When there is no spiritual growth there is no production. When there is no production, then there is no blessing. One has to produce before one can enjoy the fruits of that production. If you do not plant, do not tend, do not grow an ear of corn, then you can't eat an ear of corn never produced.
Likewise the spiritual life is the same. Saying, or pretending to follow all of the rules of the spiritual life is not enough. God can see right through the facade, its artificial and phony front. You can probably fool people, but then the spiritual life is not intended for other people, but for a relationship with God.
Now we have a picture of the problem of the land. It is Judea which has been devastated. Its people had the opportunity of living in or near the city of peace - Jerusalem. The city is a picture of the spiritual life and spiritual growth to maturity. But, the population was negative toward God, therefore selfish, therefore not charitable, therefore greedy in keeping whatever it was they had.
God provides us with everything we have. God can provide us with infinitely more than we have, but will he? If we play our little games. If we ignore the three basic obligations that we have in life, then God will certainly do to our individual lives what He did to Judea and allow us to fend for ourselves in this world, which cares nothing for our well being.
End of lesson.
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
