Job 7:7-10
7 O remember [zakar] that my life
[chay] is wind [ruwach]: mine eye [`ayin] shall no
more [shuwb] see [ra'ah] good [towb].
8 The eye [`ayin] of him that hath
seen [ro'iy] me shall see [shuwr] me no more: thine eyes [`ayin] are upon me, and I am not.
9 As the cloud [`anan] is consumed [kalah] and vanisheth away [yalak]:
so he that goeth down [yarad] to the grave [sha'owl] shall come up [`alah] no
more.
10 He shall return [shuwb] no more to his house [bayith], neither shall his place [maqowm] know [nakar] him any more. KJV-Interlinear
7 'Remember that my life is but breath, My eye will not again
see good. 8 'The eye of him who sees me
will behold me no more; Thine eyes will be on me, but I will not be. 9 'When a cloud vanishes, it is gone, So he
who goes down to Sheol does not come up. 10 'He will not return again to his house, Nor
will his place know him anymore. NASB
Job has no misconceptions regarding his
existence. The life of humanity is but a
breath, a wind. Man carries no more
control over history than the air around us.
Just as a cloud can be seen, and then when it vanishes, it can no longer
be seen. Likewise, the cloud cannot
prevent its own disappearance.
When the sun comes up, the fog and clouds
eventually disappear or move on to some other place.
Mans life is just like that. We come into the world with an inhale and the
noise of our cries, and we leave this world with an exhale and total silence.
The body left behind can be seen but the
life within us is no more. Human life
and the human body are two independent and separable things. They are not one and the same.
Once our life leaves this world, then we
no longer see the 'good' of this world. We are absent and therefore have no
further contact or interaction with the world.
So much for the soothsayers and folks that try to conjure up the dead
spirits. They cannot.
'Thine eyes,' are the eyes of God. Once we leave the world, God can see us, but
others cannot. No one can contact or
have any interaction with the dead.
The dead leave this world and, as far as
the Old Testament times were concerned, go to their destination in the
underworld called Hades. Sheol is a
reference for the land of the dead, and is generally a reference for the destination
of humanity rather than fallen angels.
Hades has four compartments. There is a chart of Hades on the web site. When people die they can go to either of two
places in Hades, Paradise or Torments.
Unbelievers go to Torments and believers go to Paradise.
Both destinations are temporary. At the end of human history, at the end of
the Millennium, Torments will give up its captives and they will be cast into
the Lake of Fire. Paradise, on the other
hand, has already given up its captives.
Immediately after the Cross and Christ's victory over death, Christ went
to Paradise and led all of those folks out of Paradise and into heaven. Paradise is now an empty place and will never
be populated again, contrary to the beliefs of Islam.
We live in this world in a house. We
call that house our physical body. Once
a person leaves this world in physical death, then that body is discarded never
to be lived in again. There is no
returning to it. No coming back from the
dead, no reincarnation, no do-over's.
We cannot undo our death, we cannot
cancel our death, we cannot turn the clock backwards in time.
Everyone has an appointment with
death. At least one death. Death is a separation from something. In our case, we are separated from life in
this world. Most generations will
experience physical death. One generation will leave this world by means of the
Rapture. Occasionally there have been
and may still be, those who will be snapped up as with Enoch and Elijah.
For those who reject Christ, then there
will be a second death, one which will take them to the Lake of Fire.
Once we leave this world, our former
home, our physical body, is discarded and will never see its life occupant
again. Neither will our life return
back to this world in any other form. We
are appointed to life for one reason, to believe in Christ and to grow up in all
aspects of our spiritual life, to settle the angelic conflict, and ultimately
to glorify God.
Man is formed of dust, and exists as
air. Dust and air are representations of
vanity or emptiness. Man is nothing,
when it all comes down to it. Man has
nothing except that which God gives him.
Man has no basis for boasting.
Man has no wherewithal for self determination.
Job is not fooled by life. Job has no misconceptions regarding his own
life. He knows that when he dies, there is an after-life, and that once dead,
all interaction with the living is cut off.
God has His eyes on each person throughout his existence.
Job does not pray to or call on the
angels. Job does not pray to or call on
his ancestors. Despite his suffering, he
is still clear in his own mind as to what is real and truth, and what is not.
