14
Therefore hell [sha'owl] hath enlarged [rachab]
herself, [nephesh] and opened [pa`ar] her mouth [peh] without
measure: [choq] and their glory, [hadar] and their multitude, [hamown] and their pomp, [sha'own] and he that
rejoiceth, [`alez] shall descend [yarad] into it. KJV-Interlinear
14
Therefore, Sheol has enlarged its throat and opened its mouth without measure;
And Jerusalem's splendor, her multitude, her din of revelry, and the jubilant
within her, descend into it. NASB
Sheol is the Hebrew word counterpart for the Greek word, hades.
In general, both words refer to the land or the region of the dead, the underworld. The underworld contains four compartments, Paradise, Tartarus, Torments, and the Abyss.
This underworld, here spoken in negative terms, is in stark contrast to heaven, heaven being the highest height attainable, whereas sheol or the underworld land of the dead being the lowest of depths imaginable and the farthest possible one can be from heaven.
Sheol has been referred to as a place of thick darkness, Job 10:21-22. It is described as having 'valleys, or depths,' Prov 9:18. It is represented also as having 'gates,' Isa 38:10. It is described as being inhabited by a great multitude, Isa 14:9.
Enlarged throat and opened mouth, means that the entrance into sheol has no limitation in size. It can accommodate any number that will enter into its depths. There are no lines, no waiting. Entrance is immediate and without hesitation.
Multitude, is a reference to great numbers that will actually enter in to the underworld land of the dead, exclusive of Paradise. Paradise is not in view here.
And all of the pomp, all of the glory, all of the partying attitude, all of the self-righteousness, all of the opinions of man, every worldly thing that people take pride in, and rejoice in, and celebrate, and assume a belief in, will slide right with them into that land of the dead. Dead things belong together and the dead never amount to anything.
Only people are resurrected, never things or objects of their pleasure and enjoyment or lust.
Only Bible doctrine is truth. Only Bible doctrine remains in the soul with the individual forever.
What happens to all of the attitude, pride, lusts, desires, irresponsibility's, mocking, ridicule, and such that characterize a life apart from doctrine?
They die right along with those people who promote them and embrace them and pursue them. They are dead things and they end up in the place of the dead, never to be heard from again.
Pursuit of the world is a pursuit of something that will cease to exist, leaving you with nothing and possibly worse for unbelievers.
