18 In that
day [yowm] the Lord ['Adonay] will
take away [cuwr] the bravery [tiph'arah] of their tinkling ornaments [`ekec] about their feet, and their cauls, [shabiyc] and their round tires like the moon, [saharon] KJV-Interlinear
18 In that
day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, headbands, crescent
ornaments, NASB
In that day, is a general phrase that simply means, at the time of the event, whatever that event happens to be.
Here the event is Gods judgment mentioned in verse seventeen, 'The Lord will smite.'
This also has a general application to each individuals life, where the choices of life are of an evil nature as had been described. But in the prophetic sense, this also applies to the end of history scenario when God makes the ultimate judgments during the Tribulation, and smites the entire world, which will be in the ultimate rebellion against God.
It will be in that period of history when all of the pleasures and trinkets and priorities that people make in arrogance, will be stripped away.
The bravery, has both a concrete and symbolic meaning and when applied to things or articles, the meaning is symbolic. The bravery symbolizes majesty, beauty, ornamental, fair and so forth. The bravery aspect is the meaning placed behind the item, by the individual. It is the confidence or pride of boasting in things.
For example, a person gets a new car, and they place a great deal of pride and boasting in that item. Even though it is neither a thinking being nor a creature of life, it is given these attributes as though it were. You will see a great deal of this type of attribute attachment in advertising for various products.
The items of beauty are going to be listed over the next few verses. And why so many verses? Because in that day, in the period of life that an individual lives, or at that significant point in history when the whole world has gone apostate, then people and society in general will have defected away, totally and completely, from God and doctrine. Society will have left truth behind and will have placed their lives in the hands of objects. Objects of every imaginable type.
The entire world will have gone overboard for their 'things.'
Remember our study in Revelation, when the world, after having been under judgment for a significant period of time, will find the population crying over their loss of 'things?'
Here is that prophecy, in part.
God will strip away the 'things' that make people proud, and even boastful about. Revealing their inner substance, which is no substance whatsoever.
The list begins with accessories.
The tinkling ornaments, are bracelets for the ankles. This is a similar word 'ekec' as was used in verse sixteen 'akac,' but slightly different to more specifically identify the ankle or the feet. This is how people walk through life or conduct themselves in life. People will have committed themselves to arrogance and the evils that attend it.
The cauls, is a reference to hair netting or accessories that are used to shape or form or accentuate the hair. The outer self rather than the inner.
The round moons, is a reference to necklaces around the neck that dangle in the front below the neckline into the chest area. These necklaces give rise or attention to accenting the chest area for both male and female respectively.
These descriptions, even though they are being made in the feminine, apply equally to both male and female. For both, or all people that are in this situation, are guilty of evil to a high degree.
If your life emphasizes things or activities to the exclusion of doctrine, then you are placing yourself in grave danger of being literally struck by Gods justice. A justice that you cannot escape. And once accomplished there will be no recovery for you.
