16 And upon all the ships ['oniyah] of Tarshish, [Tarshiysh] and upon all pleasant [chemdah] pictures. [sakiyah] KJV-Interlinear

16 Against all the ships of Tarshish, And against all the beautiful craft. NASB

Tarshish is referenced throughout the scriptures. It is often referred to as in Spain, but it is also used to refer to ships that sail far and wide which trade in goods of high value.

Tarshish is used in reference to Africa, south of Abyssinia, Isa. 60:9. It is referred to as being in the west, Gen. !0:4, Ps. 82:10.

Ezek. 28:13, mentions it as an important place of trade.

Jer 10:9, says that silver came from there.

Ezek 28:12, says that iron, lead, silver, and tin, were imported from it.

2 Chron 9:21, says that the ships of Tarshish returned every three years, bringing gold and silver, ivory, apes and peacocks or items that came from India and the east.

Isa 23:1; 60:9, the phrase, 'ships of Tarshish,' denotes ships that were bound on long voyages.

And when you fit in the last phrase in this verse, 'all pleasant pictures.' Pictures 'sakiyah,' is a reference to things that when viewed are desirable. The pictures are the images of desire that are in the mind. So this comes to mean all things of luxury or ornamental, be they property, or accessories of jewelry or clothing, or the beauty of slaves and so forth.

All things that can be look upon and desired.

Recall our study in Revelation, when economies become so bad during the Tribulation, that people will cry huge tears at the loss of their way of life. Near the end of the Tribulation, production of goods and services will virtually cease. And that means especially that the production of luxury items will cease as well.

While the world will be in the midst of the worst worldwide famine with disasters and starvation and deaths and crime and so forth all going on, people will still be wanting their luxury items more than they will want the problems of the world solved.

But when the day of the Lord arrives, their attitudes will point out that their spiritual lives and priorities in life are all non-existent and misguided. They will lose everything.

This is true not only in that last generation, but it is true even now. Far too many folks place more importance on the things of life, than they do their eternal spiritual life. The things of life will last only for a while and then will be gone.

Your spiritual life is your only real possession and it will last forever. So it should deserve at least some of your daily attention, wouldn't you think?

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
