1 The
word [dabar] that Isaiah [Yasha`yah] the son [ben] of Amoz ['Amowts] saw [chazah] concerning Judah [Yahuwdah] and Jerusalem. [Yaruwshalaim] KJV-Interlinear
1 The
word which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. NASB
The book of Isaiah is a collection of his visions as he saw them throughout his life.
Isaiah or 'Jesahiahu' means salvation of the Lord. He is the son of Amoz, and 'strong' is the meaning of his name. It is apparent that Isaiah came from a very solid spiritual background in his upbringing.
In chapter one, Isaiah stated that he saw a vision or a visual preview of the things to come.
In this chapter, he starts out with the statement that the Word, is now in view, not just an image.
The word, 'dabar,' means matter, advice, chronicle, decree, something that has been put down in writing or at least is now better documented.
So, on the one hand, a vision was presented that suggests that something could occur, if things continued as they were. There is always the possibility that things could occur differently if changes were made.
Now, the word is a second and more stern warning. Here the prophecy is committed to paper and more dramatic documentation.
And even though the topic here is Judah and Jerusalem, both of those terms are directly related to the family of God, and more specifically to you, if you are a believer in Christ.
From this first verse we are all told and in very clear terms, if you do not change or make the changes necessary in your life, then the possibilities of your having trouble, are very real. But you should know that already.
Now, a second warning, more stern now, that you really need to get your act and life together and be more attentive to exactly what God expects of you, lest those possible troubles, move more closely into your life.
With each succeeding warning, and with each pattern of indifference or non-compliance, the suffering gets closer and closer, or if already in your life, may get worse and worse.
With each tick of the clock, which by the way, you have absolutely no control over (you cannot control time), you move closer to the date of your death, or the date of your discipline or the date of your judgment.
In most cases, these difficulties occur more than once during a lifetime. This year, last year, next year, or whenever. Often times you have to look back several years before you can fully see the pattern of your life, assuming that you are reasonably objective.
But make a note here, all prophecies are not of disaster or impending doom. Many prophecies are of good things, blessings, rewards, better times and so forth.
Just as God warns of doom if you disobey truth (pursue lies), He also makes it very clear that there are good results for obedience to truth. And of course, you can miss out on the blessings just as well.
