Haggai
Introduction

The book of Haggai is a book of procrastination. People with Gods Word always present have everything 'potentially' going for them, but when people never take any action with regard to their spiritual lives they squander their only real opportunity for a great life now, and a great future.

Such is Haggai's message. To get ones act together and rebuild the temple which has long been ignored. In Haggai's time the temple had been ignored for many years.

The destruction of the temple in Jerusalem by the Babylonian armies marked the end of an era in Jewish national and religious life. As exiles in Babylon, the Jews were without a temple and without their sacrifices. Eventually under Cyrus the Great, king of Persia, some Jews were allowed to return to Jerusalem. Levitical sacrifices were reinstituted on a rebuilt altar for burnt offerings, Ezra 3:1-6, and in the second year of the return, the foundation of the temple was laid, Ezra 3:8-13, 5:16.

Samaritan harassment and Persian pressure eventually brought a halt to the rebuilding of the temple. Then spiritual apathy set in, and for about 16 more years, until the rule of the Persian king, Darius, the construction of the temple was discontinued.

In the second year of Darius, God raised up Haggai the prophet to encourage the Jews in the rebuilding of the temple. The rebuilding of a temple would mean that interest in Bible doctrine was rekindled, that giving to the church and support for doctrinal teaching was rekindled, that a spiritual revival in the souls of people (the primary objective) was rekindled after a long spiritual drought of apathy and indifference.

The Book of Haggai is the second shortest book in the Old Testament. Only Obadiah is shorter. Haggai being the book of procrastination and Obadiah being the book of the failed rock, it isn't any wonder that the shortest books of the Bible are related to spiritual failure. If a person doesn't put anything into their spiritual life, then they will never get anything out of it.

Virtually nothing is known about Haggai and his family, yet his name means festive or festival. And again that is appropriate because his message (Bible doctrine) is the indication and promise of a festive life, yet because people do not pursue their spiritual lives they know little or virtually nothing about the spiritual life, due to their indifference and refusal to take any action.

People are aware of Bible doctrine, but few will get up and begin their spiritual pursuit. Thus the procrastination barrier which seemingly rises much higher than the will of the individual.
