Haggai 1:14-15
14 And the LORD [Yahovah] stirred up [uwr] the spirit [ruwach] of Zerubbabel [Zarubbabel] the son [ben] of Shealtiel [Sha'altiy'el], governor [pechah] of Judah [Yahuwdah], and the spirit [ruwach] of Joshua [Yahowshuwa] the son [ben] of Josedech [Yahowtsadaq], the high [gadowl] priest [kohen], and the spirit [ruwach] of all the remnant [sha'eriyth] of the people [am]; and they came [bow] and did [asah] work [mala'kah] in the house [bayith] of the LORD [Yahovah] of hosts [tsaba], their God [elohiym], 15 In the four [arba] and twentieth [esriym] day [yowm] of the sixth [shishshiy] month [chodesh], in the second [shanayim] year [shaneh] of Darius [Dar`yavesh] the king [melek]. KJV-Interlinear 14 So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month in the second year of Darius the king. NASB
It took just a little over three weeks but there was a response, a positive one, to Haggai's message. Compare the date mentioned in the first verse (first day of the sixth month) with the date mentioned in this last verse (twenty-fourth day of the sixth month).
Not all people will respond immediately to the call of doctrine, but some will respond immediately and many will respond if given some time. Unfortunately most will not respond and of those who do, many or most, I should say, will drop out again from their spiritual priorities.
All people in leadership positions should see the importance of God and doctrine and therefore see their responsibilities before the Lord and subsequently before men.
We are all in leadership positions of some sort. All of us have a soul and therefore we are responsible to our self. Many have families and therefore there is responsibility to the family. Most, if not all, of us have homes and therefore we have responsibilities to our home. Most people have jobs to whom we are responsible. Many own businesses or run organizations and therefore responsibilities exist within the context of those organizations. Many are elected or appointed to positions with responsibility.
I think these categories really include everyone on the planet. So, we all have responsibilities of some sort or another, even if it is to keep our own room (kids) clean and orderly.
Responsibility comes with accountability and accountability results in an evaluation of some sort throughout our lives. The only important evaluation for us all will come at the Judgment Seat of Christ and it is there that all of our little evals will be combined into one single summary of our entire life.
We may try to pass on being nice. Or, we might think that we can get by on being nice in life, but we only fool ourselves because we are not really nice when it comes to God or the people with whom we interact. We all have opinions. We all criticize folks for one thing or another.
The single most important function of our entire life is our spiritual life. We either advance in it or we don't. And advancing in your spiritual life does not depend on what you do, but it does depend on what you think.
Thinking worldly things will gain you nothing in Gods final analysis of you. But thinking Bible doctrine will not only correct the flaws in your spiritual life, but also in your temporal life and what you do then will be a function of your proper thinking (doctrine) and not be a product of arrogance (figuring your own way through life).
The leadership of Judah took three weeks plus a couple of days to make their decision. They should have made their decision immediately. They should have not been in the situation that they were in, in the first place. But Haggai reminds them that they were not in command of their destiny. They were subject to the rule of a foreigner - Darius.
Anyone who is out of phase with Gods plan for their life is under the rule not of their own, but of a foreign power - their sin nature.
Being under the authority and rule of a foreign power means that you have no freedom, no liberty, and you are not and never will be, a citizen with privilege within the nation of your residence. The sin nature rules in the world and no one is welcome for very long, nor will anyone have a destiny within its borders. Death comes to us all and that cancels out everything that comes out of the world.
We all have but two choices of homes in which we can live. We can live within Gods defined home, or we can live within the worlds defined home which we call the jungle.
We all have eyes and ears and the senses to recognize the difference between these two homes, and to see that Gods is far better, and that the worlds appeal is only a trap. Now the question is, 'How long will it take to make the permanent (not some temporary) decision for God?' Minutes? Days? Weeks? Years? Or our entire lifetime perhaps?
Every minute you log in Gods house yields you spiritual profits. Every minute you spend out of Gods house loses you spiritual profits which can never be recovered. Hummm! Suppose you were to burn up a dollar for each minute you ignored God. Would that get you to change? Though it is a simple illustration it is a very real result of your indecision.
As Haggai has said, 'Consider your ways.'
And I will add, 'Consider the repercussions (pros and cons) of your ways.'
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
