Haggai 1:10-13
10 Therefore the heaven [shamayim] over you is stayed [kala] from dew [tal], and the earth [erets] is stayed [kala] from her fruit [yabuwl]. 11 And I called [qara] for a drought [choreb] upon the land [erets], and upon the mountains [har], and upon the corn [dagan], and upon the new wine [tiyrowsh], and upon the oil [yitshar], and upon that which the ground [adamah] bringeth forth [yatsa], and upon men [adam], and upon cattle [bahemah], and upon all the labour [yagiya] of the hands [kaph]. 12 Then Zerubbabel [Zarubbabel] the son [ben] of Shealtiel [Sha'altiy'el], and Joshua [Yahowshuwa] the son [ben] of Josedech [Yahowtsadaq], the high [gadowl] priest [kohen], with all the remnant [sha'eriyth] of the people [am], obeyed [shama] the voice [qowl] of the LORD [Yahovah] their God [elohiym], and the words [dabar] of Haggai [Chaggay] the prophet [nabiy], as the LORD [Yahovah] their God [elohiym] had sent [shalach] him, and the people [am] did fear [yare] before [paniym] the LORD [Yahovah]. 13 Then spake [amar] Haggai [Chaggay] the LORD'S [Yahovah] messenger [mal'ak] in the LORD'S [Yahovah] message [mal'akuwth] unto the people [am], saying [amar], I am with you, saith [na'um] the LORD [Yahovah]. KJV-Interlinear 10 'Therefore, because of you the sky has withheld its dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. 11 'And I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on men, on cattle, and on all the labor of your hands.' 12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people showed reverence for the LORD. 13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke by the commission of the LORD to the people saying, ''I am with you,' declares the LORD. NASB
Of the five cycles of discipline, Lev. 26, which God issues against those who ignore Him, in increasing degrees, Judah has experienced them all. From their original apathy to the destruction of the nation, the Jewish people have undergone many troubles in their lives and all due to their own failure to orient to reality.
Namely they have rejected God who holds the universe together and who holds history together, and they have pursued something else defined from their own imagination. People who ignore God pursue something else that does not exist.
Who controls the rain and makes the plants grow. Who provides the jobs and makes things prosper. God and God alone. To ignore Him is the same as asking God, in prayer, to leave us alone. So He warns and then He backs off. What happens? Trouble.
Oh, yes. The five cycles of discipline? Find them is Lev. 26.
1. Apathy toward God.
2. Apathy toward the laws of establishment.
3. Apathy toward the laws of freedom.
4. Economic pressure.
5. Military defeat.
These are increasing levels of discipline and trouble for a person or nation. They are not necessarily sequential nor chronological, but the repercussions of each brings progressively more and more trouble for the person or nation who pursues a pattern of life away from God.
The first three inevitably will result in more and more problems in the last two. The final phase of a nations existence or of an individuals life is national destruction or death.
Does God bring all of this trouble on negative people? No, not really. 'Because of you,' is the comment from Haggai. Because of the initial negative volition of the people toward God, a negative attitude that just kept on and was never put into check during their lives, then these things occurred.
Apathy leads to disregard for truth, leads to degeneracy or ones own definition of life, leads to economic instability, leads eventually to ones own destruction.
A life based on lies will never survive.
The result of Haggai's message? The people repented. They changed their attitude and they came back to the teaching of the Word of God. They did it in both thought and action. And that is really the key to the spiritual life. You cannot just believe something and then leave it at that. You have to put it into practice within your life before it becomes real to you.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
