Haggai 1:3-6
3 Then came the word [dabar] of the LORD [Yahovah] by [yad] Haggai [Chaggay] the prophet [nabiy], saying [amar], 4 Is it time [eth] for you, O ye, to dwell [yashab] in your cieled [caphan] houses [bayith], and this house [bayith] lie waste [chareb]? 5 Now therefore thus saith [amar] the LORD [Yahovah] of hosts [tsaba]; Consider [suwm][lebab] your ways [derek]. 6 Ye have sown [zara] much [rabah], and bring [bow] in little [ma`at]; ye eat [akal], but ye have not enough [sob`ah]; ye drink [shathah], but ye are not filled with drink [shakar]; ye clothe [labash] you, but there is none warm [chom]; and he that earneth wages [sakar] earneth wages [sakar] to put it into a bag [tsarowr] with holes [naqab]. KJV-Interlinear 3 Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet saying, 4 'Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies desolate?' 5 Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Consider your ways! 6 'You have sown much, but harvest little; you eat, but there is not enough to be satisfied; you drink, but there is not enough to become drunk; you put on clothing, but no one is warm enough; and he who earns, earns wages to put into a purse with holes.' NASB
Procrastination and indifference run hand in hand. Indifference says, 'I know what needs to be done, but I have other things that are more important. What is expected by God is not that important to me.'
Procrastination says, 'I know I should go out and do this or that, but this or that aren't urgent enough to me. I can do them tomorrow or some other time.'
Now what is important or urgent in your life? Lets suppose you wake up in the night and find your home in a raging fire. Do you stay in bed and think about what you might do? Do you stay in bed and decide that you will get out when morning comes?
What do you suppose will happen to you if you procrastinate or are indifferent with regard to getting out?
Well of course you will die in the fire. Duh !!! You will lose everything including your life. What does procrastination gain you then?
Your life is now on fire. You soul is raging in the fires of life and lacks the needed fire fighting equipment to put the fire out or prevent another one. This fire in the soul is the temporal life (no spiritual life) that is destroying you. The resources you need in order to protect your soul is Bible doctrine. But where is the urgency in protection of ones soul?
Here, it is mentioned by Haggai.
You (people of the general masses) are spending all of your time in working at your jobs, building up your homes, furnishing your home, having your social life, doing everything that builds up and accessorizes your physical life. And that is an investment in a home that has a raging fire destroying it.
Some folks have a lot in this world, and they are just investing in a bigger burning house. Some folks have little and so their investment is in a smaller burning home.
What are the results of both burning homes? Ashes. Nothing left. When your life's home is burned completely, what then? Well, your life is over. You are dead. When God finally takes you out of this world your earthly home (your life) is finally destroyed. Now you move onto heaven (assuming you are a believer) and you enter into heaven with nothing to show for your life.
This might be a good time to review the many parables which Christ taught. They teach a lot of the fundamentals of Bible doctrine.
The priorities of the people of Haggai's day, were all screwed up. They placed emphasis on their daily activities and they ignored the most important activity and investment of their life - their spiritual life.
God has always asked for people to give their first earnings to Him. This is good training in the habit of emphasizing your spiritual life first. Making your temporal life second. But too often people spend all of their money (all of their resources) on themselves and forget God.
Invest in your spiritual life and your temporal life will be far better than everything you could accomplish (on your own) in a thousand lives. But of course people emphasize their daily activities and they end up with nothing.
You can never earn enough to have all you want in life. You can never eat enough. You will always want more. You can never drink enough to get drunk. The spiritual life provides you with so much that you will literally be drunk (overwhelmed) with its abundance. Earthly activities can never do this.
All of your investment in time, in the social activities, in things of this life are nothing more than placing your entire life in a bucket full of holes. Everything you have drains out and you never really have anything.
Consider your ways. Consider your priorities. What is important to you. God? Then you will do well, better than well in life. If your daily activities are more important, then you will end up with nothing, and that is a certainty.
Now, we all know the doctrine, but do we believe it? Do we accept it? Will we do anything about it?
There are four levels of decisions which you are faced with before you will grow up spiritually. First you have to decide to 'listen', then to 'believe' what you learn, then 'accept' what you believe, then 'do' something about it.
Too often people will listen and might even believe what they hear, but that is where their spiritual life stops. They do not accept it into their daily habit nor do they continue in their spiritual life and obey what God expects them to do. We put together a spiritual check list a long time ago. That might be worth your review, also.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
