Lesson # Habakkuk 1:2-4 Study Material - Habakkuk 1:2-4 You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth. Habakkuk 1:2-4 2 O LORD [Y@hovah] , how long shall I cry [shava] , and thou wilt not hear [shama] ! even cry out [za`aq] unto thee of violence [chamac] , and thou wilt not save [yasha] ! 3 Why dost thou shew [ra'ah] me iniquity [aven] , and cause me to behold [nabat] grievance [amal] ? for spoiling [shod] and violence [chamac] are before me: and there are that raise up [nasa] strife [riyb] and contention [madown] . 4 Therefore the law [towrah] is slacked [puwg] , and judgment [mishpat] doth never [netsach] go forth [yatsa] : for the wicked [rasha] doth compass [kathar] about the righteous [tsaddiyq] ; therefore wrong [aqal] judgment [mishpat] proceedeth [yatsa] . KJV-Interlinear 2 How long, O LORD, will I call for help, And Thou wilt not hear? I cry out to Thee, 'Violence!' Yet Thou dost not save. 3 Why dost Thou make me see iniquity, And cause me to look on wickedness? Yes, destruction and violence are before me; Strife exists and contention arises. 4 Therefore, the law is ignored And justice is never upheld. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore, justice comes out perverted. NASB Habakkuk has been calling out to God for a long time. Society did not fall overnight, but has been slipping away from God and therefore away from that which was right, for along time. Habakkuk complains that society has fallen into destruction, violence and strife. As for destruction, that is the attitude that nothing is sacred nor respected. People will take what they want, and if borrowing or renting from another, they see no responsibility in taking care of it. Violence here is a general term which includes all acts against the rights of others. Ranging from theft (the taking of property which you are not entitled to), to gossip (invading on the privacy of others where you have no concern), to murder (the ultimate theft of ones right to live a life), to legal distortions included in all of the above. In law, rules and regulations become oppressive such that you cannot do freely what you want, with what you have. As Habakkuk ends this passage with the complaint that justice is perverted. This is the result of an entire society which has gone downhill. Judges cannot be found to discern the law. Juries cannot be found to determine fair results. Lawyers have their own agenda and promote contention for their own benefit rather than their clients benefit. And society on the whole condones all of this practice because society is corrupted with the attitude of 'me first.' With such a liability in place, then no person can call what he has, his own. Everything is subject to removal by taxation or by litigation. Right is distorted and therefore there is no right on anyone's side. All these characteristics become an integral part of a society on the downward trend, or of a society who is headed for a major judgment against itself. Because God does not appear to be doing anything about all of the problems, then no one exists who will step in and correct the downward trend of society. So the first frustration given is that of Habakkuk witnessing the social decay, the legislative abuse, and the broad injustices which have perverted all fairness in law. This downward trend continues not just for days, not months, not even years, but over the course of generations at times. The streams of social attitude are as complex as the numbers of peoples involved. Not all people slip away from God all at once. Many are positive. Many are negative. Over the course of time people themselves get distracted and pursue things in life other than the Word of God. This begins the process of spiritual decay. And where there is no spiritual preservative, then there is decay and rot in society. Evidence of this decay is found in rising crime, rising antagonism, political struggles, ever growing strife between people or between organizations, a rise in liberal thinking. Remember that liberal thinking in this study is defined as any thought which distorts, is contrary to, or compromises Gods wisdom. Now as for the why? God allows the free will thinking of mankind. People are free to think in any manner of their choosing. Even if their thinking is wrong and leads to their own self destruction. This is Gods permissive will. This is the devils world, and as the ruler, then the policy of Satan, which consists of lies and deceit, has no good purpose for mankind. Satan is concerned only for himself and in keeping himself out of the Lake of Fire. If he can destroy the human race to accomplish that, then so much the better (as far as he would care). God does not interfere in this, except to give adequate information to all concerning the repercussions of their thoughts and actions. To ignore God means that one will pursue his own destruction and ultimate failure and loss in life. Then again, God is not without concern. He foresaw all that mankind would think and do in history, and as such made provision for keeping mans history in check so that the human race would not destroy itself. Left without any form of check and balance, then man would not have made it out of the Garden very long. God will respond in the next passage. When people fall into the jungle to live their lives, then jungle rules become the force (one evil used against another evil) which will either destroy them or drive them back to the sanity of Gods wisdom. End Of Lesson Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
