Gen 19:27-29
27 Now Abraham arose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before the LORD; 28 and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the valley, and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land ascended like the smoke of a furnace. 29 Thus it came about, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.
We submit prayer requests, then we watch patiently for Gods response, Psa. 5:3. Thus it was with Abraham. He had prayed for the deliverance of Lot and his family. Abraham started with a high number, and then reduced it to ten. It is possible that, that was the number in Lot's family and extended family, we can only guess at that.
We know that Lot, his wife, and two daughters got out of the city with the wife losing her life for her disobedience later when they were in safety. So only three survived the judgment order of Sodom and surrounding area.
Were it not for Abraham's prayer for Lot, Lot probably would not have received this deliverance. God remembered Abraham's prayer and that is why Lot was delivered. Lot was not a spiritual person. He made his home in sin (Sodom) and in that surrounding environment. He had made his choice in life. Only by Gods grace and answer to Abraham's prayer request, was Lot delivered.
Abraham did not know the result of his prayer. He rose up in the morning and went to the high ridge on the west of the valley, so that he could look southward to see what if anything was to occur. The previous day, Christ had told him that Sodom was under judgment and that he would allow the city to continue if there were ten righteous within its walls. There were not.
Abraham went to see what God was going to do. Abraham had made his request. Christ had told him of the coming judgment. Now the wait and see as to what was going to happen.
Abraham could have run down to Sodom to get Lot. He could have run to the city to warn everyone to get out. But Abraham did not. He made his prayer request and he understood that what God decides, nothing can change, so he waited and watched.
That is how our lives run from day to day. We live normal lives. We go to work, and come home. We go to school and we come home. We dress the kids, fix the meals, wash the clothes, run to the store, and so forth. We do what we do on a daily basis, and we continue to follow our daily routine. We study our Bible. We read the entire Bible several times in our life time. We read the same verses over and over. We memorize. We keep Gods word in front of us so that we do not fall back into the pit of misery. We pray daily, privately, silently. We pray our confession prayer to maintain our fellowship status which secures our position inside of Gods power and presence. We pray for others that are less fortunate or are in need of help. We pray for justice and the capture or otherwise some means of stopping the terrorist acts of those very bad people out there in the world.
We wait and watch and accept what God decides. Abraham did not know the results of his request. He saw the action of judgment. The valley was on fire and everything in it was torched and now dead. Abraham could not know whether God had answered his prayer for Lot. He did know that the request to save the city was denied. God did not find ten righteous in the city.
What Abraham did know was what you and I know. God keeps His promises. Lot was delivered even though he was not entitled to deliverance. We'll see Lot's failures come up pretty quick. We know that God promises to take care of us regardless of the situations surrounding us, if, and there is that if. If we follow His will and be blameless. What is His will? To study His word. 'Study to show thyself approved...' His will is for us to remain in fellowship throughout our life - fellowship. His will is for us to advance to spiritual maturity to that place where maximum blessing can be poured out on us both now and in eternity. His will is for us to stand fast and watch His deliverance. To call to Him and He will show us great and mighty things.
Is it His will that we wear the green or the brown? No, God is interested in your soul not your attire. You wear what you like. Take this job or that? No, you work where you like. Marry this person or that? No, you get acquainted and marry whomever you get to know and are comfortable with. To go left or right? No, you go in whatever direction life leads you.
God has given you volition to decide. He has given you doctrine to learn and see truth. You combine these with your education, with your (God given) talents, with your personal goals (hopefully guided by your Bible study). Consequently, whatever you do in life, you will succeed at, 1 Kg. 2:3.
Do not fret over whether God answered your specific prayer. He may have, but you do not know of it. Simply live your life, pray regularly, and sit back and wait for the outcome. You may get the chance to witness the answer. You may not. Either way, your knowledge of the specific outcome is unimportant. Your continued advancement toward spiritual maturity is important. Continue pursuing Bible doctrine and everything else will fall in its place.
Application. Afghanistan is in the news these days. The rights and the wrongs are clear. People are polarized one way or the other. God will use this series of events to demonstrate clearly the degree of the righteous, and the degree of the wicked. He will provide some justice, but then he may allow some of the wicked to continue so that they might be used to test others in the world. A world strong of Bible doctrine or even just strong on law and order would go in and clean house thoroughly. A world blinded as to what needs to be done will disallow use of air space, not help in the pursuit of criminals, will find excuses to submit to popular opinion rather than truth. So what will happen in the end? We sit back and watch.
We do not worry as to the extent of our success of the military operation. Jesus Christ controls history, and what outcome comes along will be in accordance with Gods plan for human history as well as for every individual in the world. The bombing could hit Laden on the nose and end his involvement, but wickedness goes beyond that one man. The bombing could continue for a long time and produce no results as these terrorists hid deep inside their caves for months. Countries could get tired of the military actions and force us to back out, giving the terrorists an apparent victory. We just do not know what the outcome will be specifically. Could be that some terrorists might get trapped inside a cave and die there, and we would never know there whereabouts. This could be followed by rumors of their living with Elvis.
Whatever happens, life goes on for each one of us. We have our responsibilities and our spiritual obligations to God. We need to follow those first and let the history of the world run its course. Regardless of the attitude of the nations or the terrorists of the world, they are not in control over our destinies, God is. He destroyed Sodom, and He will take care of Laden and company. He protected Abraham and Lot, and He will protect you and me. The world cannot do more.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
