Gen. 19:12-14
12 Then the men said to Lot, 'Whom else have you here? A son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whomever you have in the city, bring them out of the place; 13 for we are about to destroy this place, because their outcry has become so great before the LORD that the LORD has sent us to destroy it. ' 14 And Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, and said, 'Up, get out of this place, for the LORD will destroy the city.' But he appeared to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
Angels often apply the judgments of God, Psa. 78:49. Here we have the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah at the hand of Gods angels as well, 'the Lord has sent us to destroy it.'
Lot receives a clear announcement that the cities are going to be destroyed. The order, is to gather all who belong to him and clear out. Otherwise, the destruction will take their lives as well.
Here we have an interesting contrast to the orders Abraham received. Abraham was ordered to cut his own private parts, circumcision, as a demonstration, or rather an application, of his faith. God ordered him with no alternatives. Abraham followed the command without hesitation, despite the rather odd nature of the command. This was a clear departure from practice in human history. No one had ever performed circumcision before, and in the spiritual life it certainly would seem a strange practice. But the command came down from the 'All Powerful, All Mighty', from El Shaddai. Abraham did not question, he did not hesitate.
On the other hand, in Sodom, Lot is told that the city is evil and has crossed the point of no return. Destruction was not only certain, but was going to happen right now. 'Collect your people and get out.' Lot too, did not hesitate, at least initially. He told his sons and they questioned the message from the angels.
The command for circumcision, one would think would be received as a joke. But Abraham took it seriously. The command to get out due to the coming destruction, one would think would be taken seriously, but was taken as a joke.
The purpose of circumcision could not be very obvious. What did cutting ones self have to do with faith and the spiritual life? That would be a reasonable question. The purpose of the destruction of Sodom was obvious. It was an evil place. It was degenerate, and violent. Strangers were not safe, after entering into the city. Probably many a stranger suffered as a result. Yet where was the concern for the son's future father-in-law? He was, after all, nearly assaulted by men with very disgusting intentions. The son's only wondered about the humor of the destruction of their city.
When a person is minus Bible doctrine in the soul, the truth is not so clear. The lies become the truth. Everything becomes perverted and twisted. What is wrong seems right, so any crusade, any purpose, any desire can be justified in the heart of the wicked. Followers are easy to come by. Any wicked leader who has the presentation of a smooth salesman, can and will deceive those who want to have some purpose in their own lives, and if they are bitter to begin with, then they are easily persuaded. All it takes is a little truth or something sounding righteous, mixed in with promises of glory, and you have the following of a cult, or mob, or whatever your organization is.
Anyone with even a little Bible doctrine in them, can distinguish the differences between truth and lies. So long as they have not crossed that line of no return. So long as they have some semblance of curiosity regarding the truth, then they might be teachable. Thus topics like circumcision can become clear to them as to its purpose, and destruction is more then clear. If the building is on fire, you do not question, but get out immediately. If society around you is wicked and lawless, then it is time to move away if at all possible.
Regardless of your situation, Bible study is mandatory, so that your thinking is clear and your life secure.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
