Gen. 19:11
11 And they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the doorway.
Lets go back briefly to Gen. 12. Here Abraham is 75 years old. Now he is 99 + years old. So in the last 24 years, he has moved out of Haran and into Canaan, then into Egypt as a result of the famine, and the Pharaoh affair. Then back into Canaan. He and Lot split up in chapter 13. Lot going to Sodom, which was then described as a wicked place.
In chapter 14 the raid of the kings alliance in which Sodom and many other places, as well as Lot, were taken captive, then subsequently rescued by Abraham. In chapter 16 Abraham is 86 years old and Ishmael is born. So in the space of eleven years, a great deal has happened in Abraham's life. Also, a great deal happened to those who lived in Sodom, as they were captured and then rescued.
Now, thirteen years later, Abraham is promised yet again, a son from his own marriage, a legitimate son. And just over the hill lives evil in the valley of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Through all of these years, Sodom has been an evil city. They have had their tests. They have failed on every count. They treat strangers with contempt. How many strangers traveled through the city and met with their demise from the mob of cut throats at Lot's door? Probably several. This was not a pattern that just began with the visit of the two angels to Lot's home. This was a pattern that has been in existence for at least a couple of decades and probably more. Years earlier they were described as, 'already' a wicked people when Lot first moved there.
Lot went to Sodom because there was not enough grazing area for the herds of Lot and Abraham. Where are Lots herds? Long gone for whatever reason. He pursued prosperity from the world and lost it all. He chose the company of evil rather than the company of Bible doctrine and suffered for that choice.
These men would not listen to reason. They were hard core negative. They were degenerate and homosexual. They cared nothing for the two virgin daughters Lot offered them. Now any normal red blooded man would jump at the chance at that kind of an opportunity. Two virgins - that is what deserted island dreams are made of. This being in the context of course of normal male - female relationships. Not criminal activity.
But these men were abnormal. They were degenerate. They were wicked to the core. They cared nothing for the rights of others, refusing to listen, so they were blinded. Violent people are so infatuated with their own designs for trouble, that they cannot and will not listen to reason. They are blinded to the truth of their actions. They live in the false truth of their own imaginations and try to manipulate the minds of those around them. They try to convince those around them that their 'false' truth is really the real truth, and thus deceive others who are ignorant.
When negative people reach a point of their total lack of focus on truth, such that they are blind even to their own actions and repercussions, they are indeed in a desperate way, Rom. 11:8-9. Their table is set. Their destiny is determined. What remains is the time left that God has allowed them to continue their evil before their judgment is executed against them.
Against all odds, defiantly evil people will still press on toward their objective, despite their helplessness. They are blind and cannot even see the door nor find it, yet they press on in total blindness to grab Lot, whom they intended violence against.
A normal person, when hit with hardships and impossible barriers will sit back and think his situation through. Perhaps a life style change is in order. Perhaps he should look for God and an answer to the problem. But hard core negative people will continue their defiant attack against greater odds. They will continue to run off the edge of the cliff, knowing that it is there.
They have in their lifetime, seen the warnings of their own capture. They have seen the greatness of Abraham's rescue even when Abraham's little group of 318 men were greatly out numbered. They know the difference between right and wrong. They chose wrong for many years and were now a threat to the region around them. God had given them time to change. God had given the region time to put this city in check, but nothing was ever done. Abraham was too busy pouting about his son and playing with the servant girl. Then it took him time to get back to his Bible study and recover his spiritual status of maturity. He still has some failures awaiting for him. A mature believer can still fail.
The men of Sodom stand behind a shut door. They stand blinded They do not listen. They refuse to see. Their judgment order is now signed.
And I can't go on without mentioning that, even in the midst of doom, there is always something good. Home run number 73 just sailed over the outfield fence, and apparently the terrorists are now under some kind of attack from US and British forces in that area of the world. We know what happened to Sodom. We'll have to see what happens to Laden and company. And maybe there'll be 74th home run for the record books! Who knows! As for us, we just keep on keeping on in our daily Bible study and life.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
