Gen. 18:23-33
23 And Abraham came near and said, 'Wilt Thou indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 'Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt Thou indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 'Far be it from Thee to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from Thee! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?' 26 So the LORD said, 'If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account.' 27 And Abraham answered and said, 'Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am but dust and ashes. 28 Suppose the fifty righteous are lacking five, wilt Thou destroy the whole city because of five?' And He said, 'I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.' 29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, 'Suppose forty are found there?' And He said, 'I will not do it on account of the forty.' 30 Then he said, 'Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak; suppose thirty are found there?' And He said, 'I will not do it if I find thirty there.' 31 And he said, 'Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord; suppose twenty are found there?' And He said, 'I will not destroy it on account of the twenty.' 32 Then he said, 'Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?' And He said, 'I will not destroy it on account of the ten.' 33 And as soon as He had finished speaking to Abraham the LORD departed; and Abraham returned to his place.
Communication with God is always a two way dialogue for believers who are in fellowship. God speaks to us via His Word. We speak to God by means of prayer.
Abraham drew near. In order to draw near to God, we must 'walk before Him, and be blameless' as was the commanded requirement God made of Abraham in the previous chapter. This is consistent throughout the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. There are not two systems of theology in the Bible - one for the Old Testament and another for the New Testament, but one cohesive plan, Jesus Christ and Bible doctrine being the common denominator throughout.
God answers prayer always. If whatever we shall asked, is possible and consistent with Gods overall plan for human history, if what is asked is possible and consistent with Gods individual plan for the individual, then the answer will be 'yes' , without hesitation. God always wishes to provide for us anything and everything that is for our benefit, for our happiness, and for the best possible outcome in our lives.
Here we see Abraham asking for the city of Sodom. Abraham knows full well that the city is corrupt. Notice, he does not ask as to the nature of their corruption. He already knows. He also knows that Lot is living there, and that is where his true request is - for the deliverance of Lot and Lots family.
There are always two parts to any prayer. The actual petition is one part, and the desire behind the petition is the other. God may answer any given prayer in divided portions. He may grant the petition, or He may grant the desire, or He may grant both.
Abraham wishes Lot to be delivered. This God grants - Lot a believer (the righteous) is delivered. The city however, is not.
God always takes into consideration the differences of those peoples who are righteous and those who are not. But there is also one additional distinction within the righteous category. They are divided up into positive and negative peoples. There may be many believers that are negative and therefore end up destroyed because their opportunities, God gave them for advancement, have run out. Unbelievers as well have many opportunities to believe in Christ, but those opportunities do not last forever. They too, run out.
God is totally fair. We have seen the disaster from this past September where many folks lost their lives in the New York and Washington DC, as well as those on the air planes. Was that fair. Yes. We cannot second guess Gods purpose or His actions. Their deaths have shaken the world. Several things have and are going to happen as a result of that event. Their individual lives were not in vain. It is apparent that this is the very event in history for which they were born - to ride in those planes, to make those phone calls, to die such that other events in history will take place, or perhaps so that other events in history will not take place. Certainly, their loss has affected many who remain alive.
Moreover, the extent of a terrorist group has become even more public knowledge with respect to the degree of its degeneracy. The world has been shaken as to their actions. Banking relations on an international scale will change as to transactions and their ability to trace them. Perhaps this is a mechanism to re-arrange the worlds financial system. Something that might not have occurred otherwise. Perhaps this is yet another arranging of the nations readying the world for the tribulation and its world wide financial system.
The nations of the south may gel together as a result of this terrorist attack - and in a positive way. Most people probably over the decades have thought that the empire of the south would be gelled together because of the Israeli conflict in the Middle East. Perhaps both will promote this alliance.
Generally history has shown that after a massive world shaking event, there follows a rearrangement of something in the world. Europe was re-structured after both world wars. Things changed yet again when the Iron Curtain fell. Events in history do not happen randomly and for no reason. There is always something to follow.
Perhaps there will be a re-surgence in Christianity, or perhaps in Islam. We do not know that full extent of the next events to follow, but God has given us a front row seat to watch history unfold before our eyes.
Abraham was given a front row seat to see how God deals with corruption. In this particular case, H will deal with it directly. In other cases, He might deal with it indirectly. Jesus Christ controls history. He controls history in basically three ways. The first is by means of direct action on His part. He spoke and the universe was created. The second is by indirect power, such as through believers carrying out His justice. Joshua and the Israelites crossed the Jordan and fought for and defeated the inhabitants of the land. Perhaps we are witness to the actions of a justified alliance against Afghanistan, thus the indirect application of Gods justice via the USA. The third method is through His permissive will. God will allow one evil group to rise up and annihilate another evil group. For example, Hitler was allowed to rise up and annihilate many in Europe. Certainly some were in the righteous category, but many were not. The Japanese in China in WW II and so forth.
Abraham made several requests. God does not grow weary of our repetitive requests, but sooner or later we need to realize that perhaps our requests are not compatible with Gods plan for history or our personal lives. Paul was told, 'My grace is sufficient for thee.' We are not all destined for front page fame. So we need to get back to the basics if necessary. We need to simply plug away at our daily study and allow God to do His work. He is more than aware of what is needed and when and where. Our responsibility is to get into fellowship and remain there as a matter of our daily practice, and study our Bibles and learn, and more important, to keep Bible doctrine before our eyes all of the time. That is the real accomplishment of a daily study program - keeping Gods word before us all of the time. In this way, we limit the possibilities of our falling away in our spiritual lives.
God listens and answers, and He will grant our requests if they are compatible with His plan for our lives.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
