Gen. 18:16-19
16 Then the men rose up from there, and looked down toward Sodom; and Abraham was walking with them to send them off. 17 And the LORD said, 'Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed? 19 'For I have chosen him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice; in order that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.'
Abraham's guests had accomplished their mission in the visit at Abraham's place. First to provide reinforcement and reassurance to Abraham with respect to the future son which he would have. God always provides comfort in many ways through His word, but of course, only when we keep that Word in front of our thoughts.
Second, Sarah needed some clarification in her own mind. Sure, Abraham had told her of the promise made on the prior visit, but she clearly was not convinced. It is not unusual for some folks to dig in their heels even in matters where they would really like the results promised. She really wanted a child, but her pride, her embarrassment at being barren and probably the Hagar affair, all tilted her into a sour and self pitied state of mind. Being old now, she just gave up and did not care to hear anything contrary to her little pit which she had accepted for her life. That is, that she would never have children. She had decided this was the case and nothing that Abraham said would change it. Feeling this way, it would not be unreasonable to understand that sex would have no interest for her. She would not listen to her husband, but there was an opening in her mind for direct advice from God, and this was all that she needed. Mission accomplished. Now it was time to move on to the worlds problems and the judgment of Sodom.
Does God hide anything from positive believers? No. With respect to those persons that are positive and advancing toward spiritual maturity, God holds nothing back and in fact reveals much with respect to coming events.
What lies ahead for mature believers? Blessing, promotion, prosperity and so forth. What lies ahead for the wicked of the world? Doom, destruction, misery and worse.
The promise of a the savior is herein promised through Abraham and Sarah. The destiny of Sodom is void of anything positive. Abraham chose Gods word, His righteousness, His justice, His guidance and provision. The peoples of Sodom and the surrounding vicinity chose sin, self gratification, selfishness. They rejected all that is good and decent, therefore they will receive all that is not good and decent.
In Revelation we studied the seven thunders, wherein John was commanded to not write their message, but this message was for negative peoples who would not listen anyway. If their ears are closed, then telling them is a waste of time. Defiantly negative people are unteachable.
In contrast, positive people will open their ears to Bible teaching and listen even if what they hear initially is repulsive to them. They stick it out. Why? Because the message of the Word is far more important, their spiritual growth and their spiritual lives are far more important than some small and otherwise petty reaction to something they initially dislike. Little things, even big things should never stand in ones way to prevent advancement to spiritual maturity. Sooner or later we will all realize that the things that we find repulsive early in our spiritual lives, are not that big of a deal. Our reactions are from our immaturity. Wisdom provides tolerance and flexibility in life.
So if you get upset when the toast is burned, or when you hear some off color joke, then your spiritual growth probably could use some advancement. When you face the lions den without flinching, with zero doubt as to what God has planned in your life, then you have arrived.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
