Study Material - Genesis 17:6-8
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Gen. 17:6-8
6 'And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you. 7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. 8 And I will give to you and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.'
Here God lays down a dual purpose in teaching the principles of the covenant. A parable if you will, that which takes something in spirit and explains it by using something out of real life.
The blessings promised to Abraham are spiritual in nature. The context of this chapter begin with the expectation that Abram will live by means of faith and in a status of fellowship. Abram is given a new name - Abraham. We are all given new names. See the study in Revelation. But we will not receive our new names until we reach the resurrection, and moreover only if we advance to spiritual maturity. Abraham was mature therefore the new name, which only God can give, was so given to Abraham. Every believer derives his name from Christ, Eph. 3:15
Abraham was dead sexually. So was Sarah, Rom. 4:17-19. Only God can make a dead thing live again. The situation was far beyond Abraham's control. He could not go out and find another suitable woman to bear his child. He tried this once, but God does not support sin. The promise was for an heir. An heir is a child from birth within the proper boundaries of marriage. Abram had a wife and the heir was promised through her and no one else. Abram tried it his own way and failed. Now God allows him to advance in his years and past the point of sexual inability, both he and his wife, in order to demonstrate Gods power.
Sexual death is nothing to God, but now God promises tremendous fruitfulness, many nations, many kings, descendants numbering beyond ones ability to count - as sands on the shore, or stars in the sky. If these can be counted, then we would know the number of descendants of Abraham.
The promise if spiritual, not physical. God will be his God and that of his descendants. This eliminates Islam and any other religion who hold Abraham as their father. There is no connection or link of any kind between Muhammad in 600 AD and Abraham in 2100 BC. Muhammad got all of his ideas from the translation of the Bible that existed in his day - the Septuagint, the Vaticanus, the Sinaiticus, the Alexandrinus, the Vulgate, and perhaps the Masoretic Texts, certainly his own imagination.
There is no other god, living or dead, that can serve as a substitute for the real God.
The promise is everlasting. This eliminates any unbelieving offshoots from Abraham. The land is the promised land of Canaan, but the Israelites have never received the full extent of that land promised. They will in the Millennium, but then only for 1000 years. After that the land will be destroyed along with the entire universe and replaced with a new universe. So everlasting means something that will survive that destruction, and that place of inheritance is heaven.
The lands on earth, in Canaan, are a representation of the lands of milk and honey, which is in heaven. Heaven is the ultimate inheritance not a piece of ground on earth. Grace is the source of this promise. Gods policy toward mankind. Grace is from everlasting, from the very source of the counsels of God in eternity past. Grace is everlasting, to the very consequences of Gods plan forever and ever into eternity.
The land of ones sojournings is Bible doctrine in the soul. We live our lives on a daily basis. We live in our thoughts regardless of where we are at any moment in time. The content of our thoughts is determined by what we put into our heads. If by Bible doctrine on a regular basis, then our sojournings are in Gods Wisdom, which requires us to walk in Gods will, walk before God, walk blamelessly (in fellowship). This then (Bible doctrine in our soul) is our real inheritance that will remain with us forever and be an everlasting possession. Everything else in life we will lose. The one true God will be ours forever as well. All other substitutes will fade into nothingness.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
