Gen. 17:2
2 'And I will establish My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly.'
God is going to make a covenant with Abram. In this promise, Abram is going to have to have children, at least one, and a son to boot. Abram will laugh in verse 17 at this concept since he is sexually dead. That means that he is incapable of sex at this late stage in his life. Yet here is God, the almighty Shaddai who is making a promise to him which requires him to eventually have sex. Most of you understand the birds and bees concept.
I had a little humor in yesterday's lesson which apparently met with great success . Humor is important in the Christian life, and I am glad to see that you all are not only reading these studies, but are apparently relaxed in your various spiritual lives out there on planet earth. We need to live a loosened life and not be too wound up in the seriousness we face day to day. The Christian life is not all gloom and doom if you obey God. Quite the contrary, our life is to be a relaxed and well balanced life. The flashlight was but a humorous comment regarding the interaction between Abram and Sarai, or rather Abraham and Sarah. Most married couples have their private conversations and humor is usually involved. We can only imagine the conversation between Abram and Sarai. It certainly did not include a headache! Of course there were a handful of offended people, but I cannot do much about their sensitivity. Perhaps one day they will see humor in a different and more relaxed light. Of all the issues that we have gone over through the years, the flashlight will go near to the top of the list for its positive response. But then it is quite calm when you compare it to the humor of Balaam riding on his donkey, or David going potty on the wall. But that is a different study, and I'll have to leave you hanging there on those for the moment. Actually God has quite a grand sense of humor.
Here is Abram. He has been pouting for years because he lacks a son, and only after he has gone silent sexually, then God comes along to promise him that he will have a son. Not only this, but his wife who has already gone into menopause, will bear that son. Sarah will laugh and therefore the name of the child will be named 'laughter' - Isaac. But that is getting ahead.
Here is the promise of an heir. Adam has already been given a promise of a savior. We commonly call this the Adamic covenant. This is also the joining of two parties by means of faith. The Noahic covenant regarding no more deluge's on the earth. This prevents the joining of man and angel as seen in Gen. 6, and promotes the joining of man and God, again in faith. The Abrahamic covenant which we are now studying. This is the promise of an heir, the promise of descendants and property or an inheritance if you will. This is a joining required by Abram and Sarai in sex in order to promote this covenant by means of their offspring Isaac. Ishmael rejected Christ, therefore he was rejected by God. This is a further joining of man to God through faith and this time it will be demonstrated by the circumcision of adult males first, and thereafter infant males. Such that, and we have already studied this circumcision concept before but will make a quick point again, that every man who goes to the bathroom will hold in his hand the principle of salvation. A constant reminder, one that no male can get away from throughout his life, that Abraham cut because of faith, therefore salvation was based on faith, not the mere surgical procedure of circumcision.
God makes a covenant with man but only after mans ability to procreate has died. Only God can bring life again to that which has died. Man is in a hopeless and helpless situation. Were it not for faith, Abram would not have any more children, and he will indeed have many more children.
The covenant is 'beriyth', a compact, a binding together of two parties. Agreements usually bring two parties together on an equal basis for a mutually beneficial outcome. Here we have two parties wherein the one party is superior to the latter. The first party, God, is bestowing on the second party, Abram, an agreement, wherein God will do all of the giving and providing, and all of the work in effect, and the second party, Abram, does nothing but believe in Gods promise.
God establishes the promise. Abram is the recipient and does nothing to earn or even deserve the promise.
Some would scoff and then ignore the promise. Abram laughed at the humor, but then he will take a knife to himself. Wince! And then ..... take a ... a ... flashlight to bed! With brand new batteries of course!
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
