Study Material - Genesis 14:3
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Gen. 14:3
3 All these came as allies to the valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).
The four kings came to invade and sack the valley region of Siddim. This is the area now covered by the Dead Sea. In ancient times this area was dry, well watered and covered with tar pits of sorts. At some point in time massive earthquake or a series of earthquakes dropped this area to well below the sea levels of the adjoining oceans, thus burying the cities of the plain Sodom and Gomorrah deep below the water of the dead sea.
Amraphel or better known as Hammurabi king of Shinar (Babylonia), warrior, builder, law giver who ruled over Babylonia during the time of Abraham, about 2000 BC. Shinar is a representation of the whole of Babylonia the region where Nimrod ruled and where Babel was built. Drawing from mankind and mankind's abilities with respect to the advancement of man by mans efforts. God is excluded and replaced with the inventions of manmade gods.
Arioch king of Ellasar, otherwise known as Eri-Aku or servant of the moon god, the nourisher of Ur who ruled Ellasar which was located on the east bank of the Euphrates River and was a center of worship of false gods of the sky like the sun god and such.
Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and a descendent of Elam a descendant of Shem. Servant of the 'god of Laomer', and one of the early Persian kings of the east. Ruled Elam, generally located along the Tigris River to its west, and bounded by Media to its north, Persia to its east, and Babylonia to its west.
Tidal king of Nations (Goiim). These are the mighty kings in the eastern alliance who controlled or ruled the west. They had such power that they collected taxes, tribute, from the kings of the Jordan valley, who will get tired of the payments required of them and revolt.
These kings make up the alliance of the army of the east come to take the tribute which the nations of the valley apparently began to refuse to repay.
The jungle of this world rules by force and violence. If you do not comply with the greater power, then you are subject to its punishment, a punishment which is not merely a correcting punishment, but a cruel and unfair and ongoing punishment. The world is unfair and seeks not to teach you to be a better person, but rather seeks to take from you to satisfy the desires of the strong.
Jesus Christ controls history. He rules in many ways. First He can control with direct action on history. God can speak and creation occurs. His second method of control is indirect control. The word of God is taught and learned by believers who direct history by their decisions they make on a daily basis. The third method is by the permissive will of God. Allowing one evil force to punish another evil force. So God controls history in this chapter by allowing one force, the kings of the eastern powers to come and punish the kings of the valley region. One evil group is going to inflict Gods judgment on another evil group.
But there is still another purpose of this attack, and that is the discipline of Lot, a believer who is being punished by the use of this eastern army. And the last party involved is Abram. The positive believer who will be tested by all of these events.
We cannot look at someone and determine if they are being punished because of their unbelief, their negative belief, or if they are being tested by their compliance with Bible doctrine. A positive believer lives in this world and faces tests as a result of being here. A test of a positive believer might be punishment of a negative believer or judgment of an unbeliever. Regardless of the person you are, these pressures of life are designed to bring you either to salvation, or wake you up to your need for Bible study, or reinforce your faith for furthering your spiritual growth.
Do not think that the problems in life you experience are for punishment alone. If you are positive and advancing in your spiritual life, then these are tests to see how strong your faith really is, and to strengthen your strength. If you have been lax in your Bible study, then these pressures are discipline measures to get your attention and back to Bible study. These pressures of discipline can intensify all the way to the point of your death if you remain stubborn and negative in your attitude toward God.
All of these results will be revealed in the next few verses.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
