Gen. 13:5-7
5 Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 And the land could not sustain them while dwelling together; for their possessions were so great that they were not able to remain together. 7 And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. Now the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling then in the land.
Lot had been with Abram since they left Haran many years prior. They went through the problems of contentious enemies as they passed through the land. They went through the famine and the ordeal with the Pharaoh incident. Now having returned and in a very prosperous position, this same prosperity was a source of their splitting.
People can remain loyal to each other in times of difficulty and split up when things become prosperous. Likewise people can split up in times of difficulty, blaming each other, and split up. The point here is that life in this world will throw us differing circumstances. If we have our eyes on the circumstances rather than on God, then we will not survive. Sooner or later we become competitive, or judgmental and find excuses for getting away from the other person, or job, or whatever it is that we wish to separate from.
People without doctrine lack loyalty, and are ruled by their emotions, lusts, self righteousnesses. In short they are ruled by their sin nature.
This world cannot provide for each of us in a fair manner. Our sin natures prevent this. Selfishness, criticism, blaming others, coveting or lusting for more, all of these and more get in our way of clear thinking.
This thought process overflows to those in our periphery. The herdsmen had loyalties to their respective masters, but they were biased in their loyalties as well. Fed by the contention between Abram and Lot.
God can find a solution for every problem. If more grass was needed, then more would grow. If more water was needed, then more would be provided. But Lot looked not to the provisions of God, but to the provisions from the earth. Short on grass. Short on water. Grass and water are things of this world and will come and go. Doctrine is eternal and is readily available to everyone. All solutions come from doctrine. The world can solve nothing, but really is a source of problems, shortages, and so forth.
To top this off, 'the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling then in the land'. They were surrounded by enemies. The Canaanites have the curse through Ham, and the Perizzite, though not mentioned in Gen 10, are associated with the Canaanites in several passages. Perizzite, 'perizzi', villager, is also coupled with the Canaanite (Gen 13:7; 34:30; Judg. 14:1). Canaanites and Perizzites at Shechem (Gen 34:30), at Bezek in Judah (Judg. 1:4) and at Gezer (Josh 16:10). In Deut 3:5 and 1 Sam 6:18, where 'unwalled towns' and 'country villages,' Perizzite is the literal translation of the Hebrew being 'cities of the Perizzite' or 'villager' and 'village of the Perizzite.' The same expression occurs in Est 9:19, where it is used of the Jews in Elam. In Josh 17:15,18, where the Manassites are instructed to take possession of the forest land of Carmel, 'Perizzites and Rephaim' are given as the equivalent of 'Canaanite.'
So here we have peoples of unwalled villages, declared enemies of the Hebrew, without morals and typically will squabble over little things. They surround Abram and Lot, who are now acting just like them.
When troubles or potential trouble surrounds you, it is time to stick together, for better or worse. If strife, or personal feelings get in the way, then your organization, family, marriage, employment, will crumble. Doctrine is the only way to survive these problems. Doctrine is the only resource which will provide security in times of trouble and confidence in those around you, as well as a direction and path out of the predicament you find yourself. Running away, splitting up, blaming others will not resolve your problems, it just leaves the door open for a repeat of the same problems in your life.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
