Gen. 11:5-9
5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And the LORD said, 'Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.' 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth.
God is fair. He gives us lots of rope to do our own will. He gives us lots of warning to help us avoid disaster, but sooner or later, He stops the clock, and judgment happens. God observed the city and the tower in particular as they were being constructed of inferior materials. Mankind is an inferior creature, and is not capable of creating or building anything apart from the materials of this world. They used bricks and tar. Their logic was to protect themselves from known disasters. Not realizing that there are many unknown sources of disaster in the world, which they have not yet seen.
Negative volition toward God is a source of an unknown disaster to all who ignore or reject God. This negative attitude destroys the soul and it occurs over time and apart from the person realizing that he is destroying his own soul. God builds from priceless materials, Rev 21:19 and Isa 54:11+. God builds with material which has intrinsic value, material which is strong and capable of withstanding all attacks from all sources. Bible doctrine is of course that invincible material for the soul.
The sons of men built the tower. God did not authorize it. God never authorized any human effort to rise up to the level of God. It is impossible for man to accomplish this anyway, yet man in his own wisdom thinks that he can accomplish anything given time, technology, and so forth. But the more we learn, the more we do not know. I read an article the other day on the mapping of proteins. Apparently there are about 40,000 of them and they make up the codes for the functions of all those little DNA programs which determine how and why things do the things they do. It took over a year to map only one protein, using a series of super computers. So in 40,000 years we will have all of them mapped, or sooner when super computers get faster. But that is just a parts list, not an explanation of how or why they work, and no manual to help us learn the how's and why's. And I'll bet that as science gets deeper into this study, even more questions will arise. The Bible states that Gods wisdom is vast. The universe cannot hold it all. Technology will make us more comfortable and give us more advantages but it will not give us eternal life nor a relationship with God.
God recognizes that the people are one race, one language, and if left to their own devices, then they will go the same way as the preflood peoples. They will dive into degeneracy and disaster. Verse 6, if nothing is done, then nothing will prevent them from sinking lower in life. Nothing will be with held from them. No self constraints will stop them. So God, instead of destroying the human race, which has already demonstrated itself degenerate in the time before the flood, has decided to save the human race in its second failure, which has only been a couple of hundred years after the flood. Sometimes we learn nothing from history.
So God, in an instant, caused the original language of Adam, to disappear and all the family lines named in the previous were given new languages. A miracle that should have caught the eye of all of them. Some might think that Adam's language remained with Eber and was the Hebrew language, but I think that the old preflood language went away as well, so there would be no link or means of becoming arrogant as to having the original language for any one group of people. Gods word is the issue, not some ancient language which some would certainly try to make into a religion. If you count all the family lines at the end of the respective sons of Noah, then there were probably 50 or 60 languages instantly created.
God spares man from himself by means of language. God sets up barriers in the form of nations to help man protect himself. And finally, God sets man adrift to the assigned lands for geographical barriers to protect man from himself. So the existence of independent nations, geographical distance, and volition all help man to protect himself from himself. One government and one language were hindrances to mankind. They were tools which aggressive people used to enslave others and to destroy freedoms.
Nationalism is a good thing. No one nation should have rulership or control over other nations. Politics and corruption eventually destroy the freedoms and rights of the citizens. Until the second advent and the sole rulership of Christ, there will always be separate and independent nations, despite wars, and economic agreements. Even in the Tribulation when Satan attempts to rule the world, the four major spheres of power will clash head on in the final battles.
Man is confused apart from doctrine. Man thought himself wise in construction, but God proves man foolish by simply changing the language. No major disasters. No major death judgments. Just a simple language change and man falls apart in his unity and oneness.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
