Gen. 11:1-4
1 Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words. 2 And it came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 And they said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.' And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. 4 And they said, 'Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name; lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.'
Chapter 11 begins the history in its trend from the ark over the next 300 years. From the time of the departure out of the flood by Noah, his wife, his three sons and their three wives, these eight people began in a new world. The old world being gone now, totally destroyed by the tremendous power of the massive ocean which covered the entire earth during the past year. When they got off of the ark, they would not recognize anything or anyplace. They did still have their common language which carried over from prior to the flood.
In the previous chapter God indicates that the history of the nations and their separations and their different languages were ordained by God. So that the people would repopulate the world. But in chapter 11, there is a differing opinion. They were of the same race, the same language and were so until the tower of Babel event. Nimrod had a son named Babel and through Nimrod the tower was constructed. Nimrod was a tyrant, a mighty hunter. He accomplished his goal by force, and by the permissiveness of the people.
The peoples journeyed east, down off of the mountains of Ararat and into the plains of Syria and Iraq. Probably following the Euphrates river. They did not go there all at once, but migrated over the years. Eber was a contemporary of the 'splitting' up of the peoples, and he was born 67 years after the flood. So this splitting or rebellion against God came from relatively young people in this first couple of centuries after the flood. Abraham was born 292 years after the flood and these events occurred prior to Abraham. This give us a reference as to the time frame of the Babel incident.
The people in verse decide in their united rebellion, that is the majority decided, to build a tower, verse 4, made of brick and tar. They did not use stone or mortar. They used the easier of construction materials. They wanted to build their city and tower to 'make a name' for themselves, verse 4, and 'lest they be scattered' over the face of the earth. They would not be concerned with being scattered unless they had been commanded to go their separate ways. They directed their opposition against God, so the command ultimately came from God. The command to go their separate ways. And their ways were as we studied in the previous chapter. Japheth to the east, Ham to the south, and Shem in between. But they rebelled and used bricks and tar to build up their defenses against yet another flood. The tar would keep the water out. Note the similarity of the tar used in the ark. But wood was the material used in the ark not bricks made of mud and straw, so the material used signifies the degree of the rebellion against God. When people are against God, when they simply ignore God in their life, then they think up bad advice on their own. They are their own counsel and their logic results in false concepts.
God has already promised not to flood the earth again, yet their defense was to hold out water. Heaven is light years from earth, in fact if is outside this universe. The first heaven is the atmosphere surrounding this earth. The second heaven is the universe. And the third heaven, where God resides, is outside this universe. Gods heaven is not a part of creation. Now these people are going to build a tower all the way to heaven with structurally unsound material and unsound engineering, and certainly with very little knowledge about the upper atmosphere and beyond. So they are fools through and through.
Nimrod has to hold them together with force, which is easy since they are all of one language and all negative against God. Fame is their carrot. Fame for future generations. So note the contradiction again. They recognize that they will die and that future generations will rise up. So they wish to be famous for history. Yet they disregard the fact of their own death, and what would happen to them. They probably figured they would just climb up the tower in defiance to God and walk right into heaven.
The rulership of the world is safe when placed under God. When rule is placed in the hands of man, then the only safety is separation of groups, so this is the plan to save the human race from itself. They all spoke the language of Adam. Probably thought it was the sacred language. The people wanted to remain together, but God had other plans for them. Future history required disbursement, which was being rejected by the majority of the peoples. Common sense would lead one to recognize that a growing population would force movement, and if there was not plan or orderly way of assigning land, then there would be conflict. But these peoples rejected Gods counsel and set out to build their tower.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
