Gen. 5:6-20
6 And Seth lived one hundred and five years, and became the father of Enosh. 7 Then Seth lived eight hundred and seven years after he became the father of Enosh, and he had other sons and daughters. 8 So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died. 9 And Enosh lived ninety years, and became the father of Kenan. 10 Then Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years after he became the father of Kenan, and he had other sons and daughters. 11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died. 12 And Kenan lived seventy years, and became the father of Mahalalel. 13 Then Kenan lived eight hundred and forty years after he became the father of Mahalalel, and he had other sons and daughters. 14 So all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died. 15 And Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Jared. 16 Then Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Jared, and he had other sons and daughters. 17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died. 18 And Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and became the father of Enoch. 19 Then Jared lived eight hundred years after he became the father of Enoch, and he had other sons and daughters. 20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died.
The Bible states that each of these men had many sons and daughters. It does not imply that the named son was the first born. These named men were believers in the promised savior, who we know as Jesus Christ, of course. They also understood that the Savior was the Son of God, the one we refer to as the second person of the trinity.
Here in this chapter we have the selected listing of the line of Christ. These man had many sons, but there could only be one line from which Christ would come. That is until the line reached David, then it was split into two lines. One for Joseph and the other for Mary. Both of whom came from David through Solomon, Joseph's side, and Nathan, Mary's side.
We need to note their longevity in spite of the lack of medical advances that we now have. But even our current technology and medicines and diets do not give us life spans of 800 or 900 years. We are only in the 80's or 90's on average.
We should count our days as blessings especially because they are so few when compared to the days of the first generations. By the time we make it to our 20's and begin to dry out behind the ears, then we have only 30 or 40 years to get our life together. Certainly an older person is not shut out of doctrine, but those latter years can be trying, and missing out on a very productive life is certainly a loss.
Each of these man were born during the time of Adam. See the Generations image diagram on the Index page. From Adam to Lamech, all of these men lived as contemporaries. They most probably walked and talked with each other a great deal.
Noah is the only one who did not live when Adam lived. Noah was born after Adam died. Also each of these men, from Adam to Enoch, died before the great angelic infiltration of chapter 6. Note that this includes seven generations, comparable to the seven generations of Cain, in number at least. Cain's line will be consumed in the angelic infiltration and then wiped out in the flood. Adam's line will continue up to, and through the flood.
Whether your life is short, seconds long, or long in years, God takes care of his own. I hope you recall our study of David that all children prior to the age of accountability are saved automatically in the event they die. God is very fair and will not send anyone to the lake of fire when they have not had the opportunity for salvation. So those starving children in the third world do have some blessing in their short lives. Actually if they had lived they might have redirected the course of history as believers, but God controls history and sees fit to remove people early in life. This is not a tragedy. And if any of you lost a child at a young age, then rest assured that, that child is in heaven today.
God took care of these men and their families, just as he took care of the line of Cain in an indirect manner. Cain's line had the benefit of living on this planet when the earth was lush with vegetation. Cain's line had ample opportunity to believe in the savior. These men mentioned did believe in Christ, and they were blessed in their lives accordingly.
Not much is mentioned about them other than they had long lives and many children, and that they are in the line of Christ. A line that passed by means of their individual decision to believe in Christ. They lived many thousands of years ago, and still the record is not lost to history. God keeps detailed account of those who belong to Him. Even though our names are not listed in the scriptures, you can rest assured that each of us is recorded in heaven, and in detail.
These men lived in a time when the earth was lush an green, when the population was growing rapidly, and they witnessed the negative volition of many people despite their apparent prosperity. In comparison, when the last dispensation comes, the millennium, there will again be great prosperity, long lives, and again by the end of the millennium, there will be a great population of unbelievers that will rally around Satan when he is released from his 1000 year prison, and Christ will put that revolt down in the conclusion of human history. Mankind started out with Adam, a believer. The millennium will start out with believers only, as Christ will remove all unbelievers from the earth at the second advent. Remember, the blood will run as high as the horses bridle. So at the second advent, billions will die. Adams era ended in the flood, and the millennium will end with the final revolt against Christ.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
