Gen. 4:16-18
16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. 17 And Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son. 18 Now to Enoch was born Irad; and Irad became the father of Mehujael; and Mehujael became the father of Methushael; and Methushael became the father of Lamech.
Cain, of his own free will and decision left from the presence of God. He left his family, rejecting the authority of the Adam and his teaching. Cain never again comes back and is forever gone for eternity. 1 Thes. 1:9, the punishment of eternal destruction is apart from the presence of God. We will never see the torments that unbelievers will suffer. Once they depart into the lake of fire they will be forgotten and never seen again. There will not be any torment of pressure on us, believers, due to their, the unbelievers, state.
Cain was not driven out, but chose to go his own way. He openly rejected the Word of God and he chose to disregard its commands. Cain made his choice after he had all the facts. He did not make an uninformed decision. What got in his way was his own arrogance and closed mindedness.
He went to the east, defying God and the angels who stood guard at the entrance of Eden on its east side. He went to Nod, a land named by himself, because that was his choice residence apart from God. Nod also means shaking or trembling, continual restlessness and uneasiness. He had no peace. Unbelievers choose against God and therefore choose restlessness. Apart from God there is no peace and no contentment. Cain was of the attitude that he could chart his own course in life, ignoring the fact that he was only dust, and dust does not have self determination apart from the grace of God.
Others left God as well. Cain had a wife and children. He built a city. A city is made up of many people, not just one or two. Many people went the way of Cain. Adam not being too far away, and God is never ever too far away such that anyone who seeks Him can find Him. Cain chose to make his home of this world in building the city. The home of believers is not of this world but in heaven. These tabernacles, these biological bodies are but temporary vessels in which we are housed. Psa. 17:14, those who reject God make their portion here on this earth. They make their satisfaction from the resources of this world. But all this is temporary. They choose that which will fade and cease. They reject that which will last forever, Bible doctrine.
Cain arms himself with busy work. He departed the land which was not going to produce as before, or rather, was not going to gain him favor with God as he had hoped. Instead he begins his construction work to build up his security in homes and buildings. Adam lived in the country, in tents, in temporary living quarters as our bodies are temporary. And Cain has listed seven generations after him and then they stopped. By Gods grace they were all given an opportunity to turn to God, but apparently they rejected God and therefore they ceased. Adam had ten generations through Noah and then from there many more until our present day.
The seven generations of Cain are listed briefly. After this the ten generations of Adam are listed through Noah and the flood. During this time they all had very long life spans. They al had the opportunity to turn to God. They all had many children. Yet the line of Cain went down with the flood and are no more. The line of Adam survived the flood and continued in human history to the Cross and beyond.
Cain's generations had very little to show for their existence here on earth. They went down hill as we will see in the seventh generation. Instead of grace and spiritual growth, they invested in arrogance and degeneracy until the flood cleared the world of them. Everyone in life is given three things with which to invest in, time, volition, and Gods Word. Each of us has these three capital items and depending on what we do with them, so goes our future. We can determine our destiny to the extent of heaven or hell. We can make the right choices in life, starting with knowledge in Bible doctrine, and from there allowing God to lead us through life. With doctrine in the soul and a spiritually mature status in life You will function as you are supposed to, by making the right choices, and allowing the gifts and abilities that God gave you to function to their fullest. Choosing against God you are no better off than anyone in the jungle and at its mercy, which means you lose, because the jungle of the sin nature swallows up everything.
Cain named his sons after or early the same names as those in the line of Adam. But a name means nothing. It is the content of the soul which is significant and of importance in life. You may have a name that is similar to someone great, or you might have been named after your parents, but we all stand or fall on our own decisions. No one else in life can carry us on their name. Each of us is an individual and unique. This world emphasizes winning and further defines a second place or last place. Not everyone can make the team or finish at the top of their class. But in the spiritual life, God can make each of us winners. He can make each of us the top of the class. There is no limitation to your spiritual growth, unless you impose that limit on yourself. And most limits come from a negative or lazy or apathetic attitude. Cain will soon disappear in our present study and from life completely, but the Bible goes on. God is not limited by mans failure, nor is he helped by mans successes. Never think that you have arrived at some point where you do not need God or further study. Your soul needs its food, and just as you eat the same things repetitively in life, so you need to study Bible doctrine for your entire life. Food for the body has a limit, but food for the soul has no limits.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
