Gen. 3:20-24
20 Now the man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. 22 Then the LORD God said, 'Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever'-- 23 therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned every direction, to guard the way to the tree of life.
'Ishah' means woman. This was the name Adam originally gave Eve. Now he calls her 'Evah' which means life and we use Eve as the translated name. Adam means red earth. So now we have the source of life of the human race. But this is biological life, not soul life. Soul life comes from God which he breathes into man when he is born. But what mankind perpetuates, is life from the soil (dust). For dust we are and dust we will return. The two components of life are man and woman. Biologically all man can produce is the flesh and blood infant. And this ability to produce children came from God as well. Man cannot produce human life. This comes from God alone.
In addition, Adam demonstrates his understanding of the promise of the seed of the woman, the savior to come. Adam renamed his woman to life because she is to be the source of the savior who will crush the head of the serpent, Satan.
Herein Adam as well as Eve have believed in the promise and have been restored as saved persons, no longer under the condemnation of eternal death, but still under the condemnation of their initial sin. 'The man has become like us.' Cognizant to the existence of the angelic conflict and the conflict between good and evil. Job and his friends in their conversation made it very clear that they learned Gods Word from their elders, their fathers and the generations preceding them. Adam taught doctrine to his descendants and God taught Adam. Of course God taught others as well. That is how we have the scriptures.
Isa 28:20, the wrapping of fig leaves was too narrow and too thin to cover the nakedness of man. The sin of man was a disgrace and man cannot cover it up or cancel it at all. But God made clothes of skins. Skins are strong and durable, covering the body completely and protecting from the cold and prying eyes of those who would interfere in our lives. The skins came from living animals which had to die. And they died right before the eyes of Adam and Eve. By sacrifice came the first physical death in this world. By sacrifice came the first lesson of the Cross and the work of Christ.
The sacrifice is divided, putting a distance between God and man. The animal is burned for a pleasing aroma of the work of the sacrifice to God. And the skins are given to man to be able to cover the disgrace of man with Gods righteousness. The fig leaves are mans righteousness and mans attempt to solve his own problem. The ritual signifies all of the aspects of Christ's work on the Cross. So at the very outset, Adam and Eve were taught the gospel and they by their correct sacrifice which they themselves performed, indicates their belief. For by faith are we saved. This principle has never changed.
God sealed off the tree of life, Jesus Christ. Access to Christ and the tree of life is through the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross only. There is no other means by which we can be saved. Mans works are rejected and man cannot gain salvation through his own efforts. God prevented this by sealing off the tree of life and allowing only one way to be saved and therefore only one way of gaining knowledge of God, and that is through Jesus Christ and Bible doctrine.
They were still in the Garden when these things occurred, still under Gods protection. But now God drove them out of the Garden to fend for themselves in their cultivation of the soil. 2 Pet. 2:4, some of the angels that rebelled were sent to the lower regions to await judgment, but man was sent out to work the soil. Why?
Man was the demonstration of Gods just wisdom. By example, mankind has the option of working for himself and seeking eternal life by means of his own efforts. Through brute force, through mythical beliefs, through rules and regulations, through technology, through philosophy, and the list goes on. Man has tried everything to make this a better world, but we are still here and we still die. In the beginning Adam and his generation lived 900 + years. That life span fell to the 20's through the dark ages. Now we are proud that we can live into the 80's and 90's. Some even make it to 100 or so. Even with our medical progress we have not made it to the ages that Adam's generation lived to. Even in Moses' time of slavery people lived to nearly 200 years. So we have not done much even with our technology, transplants, artificial parts and vitamins.
So man and man's history are a demonstration of how mans efforts are futile and totally worthless. Many have forgotten about God and have defined their own version of spirituality. But God has given us all, from Adam until now, the same opportunity of salvation through faith in Christ. And that opportunity has not changed and never will.
God stationed a detachment of angels with flaming sword pointing in every direction to prevent man from gaining access to the Garden and the tree of life either by mans own wisdom or by mans brute force. The flaming sword of Christ's judgment will eventually eliminate all of the barriers and causes of death and open the way again to the tree of life which is himself. With his work on the Cross he defeats sin and death. At his final judgment he eliminates sin and death forever.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
