Gen. 2:8-9 8 And the LORD [Yahovah] God [elohiym] planted [nata] a garden [gan] eastward [qedem] in Eden [Eden]; and there [sham] he put [suwm] the man [adam] whom [aher] he had formed [yatsar]. 9 And out [min] of the ground [adamah] made [tsamach] the LORD [Yahovah] God [elohiym] to grow [tsamach] every tree [ets] that is pleasant [chamad] to the sight [mar'eh], and good [towb] for food [ma'akal]; the tree [ets] of life [chay] also in the midst [tavek] of the garden [gan], and the tree [ets] of knowledge [da`ath] of good [towb] and evil [ra]. KJV-Interlinear 8 And the LORD God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. 9 And out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. NASB
Here we have a focus on a smaller location on the face of the earth. God has already planted the earth and housed it with all kinds of animal life. The entire earth is now a garden of sorts. Even archeology has discovered that there is even fossil evidence in Greenland and the northern areas that point to a lush plant life thousands of years ago.
But now we have the second reshaping of the earth. The third reshaping will come when Adam is evicted from the Garden. The fourth reshaping will come in the time of Noah when the entire earth is flooded and covered with water. The fifth reshaping will come in the tribulation when catastrophe after catastrophe strikes the earth. The sixth reshaping will come after the second advent of Christ when the earth will once again become a lush planet full of plant life. And the seventh reshaping will come after human history ends when the new earth and universe are created.
But we are now studying the second reshaping of the earth. It was filled with all sorts of plant life. And God now directs our attention to a smaller designated area called Eden, which means delight and pleasure. We should also note that Lucifer too once lived in an area named Eden, or the Garden of God.
Eze. 28:13, Eden was referred to as the Garden of God where Lucifer resided and prior to the restoration of planet earth. It is important to note that this was long before the fall of Lucifer. But Lucifer did fall and in humor God established a location for man that was similar to the location of Lucifer and from which Lucifer rebelled.
Lucifer was not influenced by anyone else in his rebellion. He did it from his own volition, but Satan will cause the downfall of man by influencing man or rather the woman. Man did not initiate his own decision to fail, but was led into it by Satan. Satan is the father of evil. Arrogance is the father of sin.
God describes the place for a couple of reasons. First throughout the Bible many things are described as shadows of the realities in heaven, copies of the real thing. See the study in Heb. 10. Here Eden is described as a copy of the place that exists in heaven, a place where Satan once lived with everything provided for him. So too man was provided with everything he could ever want. Man could have lived indefinitely if he had followed the rules set out by God, but of course man failed and we have our history as we all know it.
There was also planted in the Garden two trees. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which is the wisdom trend authored by Satan and follows the wisdom of man, our discoveries of nature, the truths we learn in the field of science, math, cooking, and everything else excluding spiritual knowledge.
Good encompasses our education and human morals of sorts. Things we can access with our five senses. Evil is the rejection of God and the ultimate truth, of criminal behavior, of sin and such. Such is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The tree from which God said not to eat. And for good reason. It leads only to misery and destruction. Isa. 50:11, all who light their own fires and pursue their own knowledge will eventually fall to the delusion of their empty truths.
This tree then represents mans efforts to pursue knowledge apart from God. The result? Disaster.
The other tree is the tree of life. This is the tree of spiritual truth, Jesus Christ. The wisdom of God and the destiny of greatness as a result of following it. Rev. 2:7, the tree of life is in the Paradise of God, and is also referred to as Jesus Christ. John 6:48, Christ is also referred to as the bread of life. The food for the spiritual life which nourishes the soul. Adam had only to eat from the tree of life and he would have lived forever. But again he eventually made the wrong choice and history as we know it began.
Deu. 30:19, the choice is always set before us. To choose for good and live or choose evil and die. So God has set the stage. He has restored the planet earth and even set up a smaller area where he placed man. Everything has been provided for him, including the daily choice for or against God.
We have this choice always before us as well. To study our Bible regularly or to get lazy or even self centered or engrossed in self pity, or to become indifferent and ignore God. What do we have to gain by chasing off into the dark? For that is what you do in effect when you get lazy and ignore God. Or you can choose to study and grow a little each day, day by day. And eventually grow up to spiritual maturity.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
