Genesis 1:14-19 14 And God [elohiym] said [amar], Let there be lights [ma'owr] in the firmament [raqiya] of the heaven [shamayim] to divide [badal] the day [yowm] from the night [layil]; and let them be for signs [owth], and for seasons [mow`ed], and for days [yowm], and years [shaneh (in pl. only),]: 15 And let them be for lights [ma'owr] in the firmament [raqiya] of the heaven [shamayim] to give light [owr] upon the earth [erets]: and it was so. 16 And God [elohiym] made [asah] two [shanayim] great [gadowl] lights [ma'owr]; the greater [gadowl] light [ma'owr] to rule [memshalah] the day [yowm], and the lesser [qatan] light [ma'owr] to rule [memshalah] the night [layil]: he made the stars [kowkab] also. 17 And God [elohiym] set [nathan] them in the firmament [raqiya] of the heaven [shamayim] to give light [owr] upon the earth [erets], 18 And to rule [mashal] over the day [yowm] and over the night [layil], and to divide [badal] the light [owr] from the darkness [choshek]: and God [elohiym] saw [ra'ah] that it was good [towb]. 19 And the evening [ereb] and the morning [boqer] were the fourth [rabiy`iy] day [yowm]. KJV-Interlinear 14 Then God said, 'Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth' ;and it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. 17 And God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. NASB
To this point God was the sole provider of light by which all could observe His work. Now God creates lights that have a function to provide light for planet earth by day and by night. Their sole purpose was to separate the day from night, to define the signs for agriculture, the seasons of the year (spring, summer, etc.) and for tracking time in days, years and so forth.
God made the lights. The word for 'made' is 'asah', to make according to a pattern. So God made these lights and placed them in their exact position for serving their primary purpose. Note that they were not created for the angels, but were created for the purpose of serving this planet. God decorated the heavens for beauty as well, Job 26:13.
Anyone who lights a candle doesn't hide it, Luke 8:16, likewise God lit the skies and uses them to demonstrate His power and the vastness of His wisdom, Dan 12:3. And one can wonder what value we as poor simple mankind have for God, when compared to the tremendous array of the universe, Psa. 8:3-4.
The lights that rule the sky, day and night, have their functions and serve in them faithfully on a continual basis. But they are but great balls of chain reaction explosions and instability, or they are mere reflectors of the light generated by other objects as in the case of the moon.
The greater light is the sun and it rules the day whereby most of the production of this earth takes place. All life comes from the source of God who is the true light, unlike the temporary lights He created and are fading as this universe is fading. God started out being the sole provider of light. At the end of human history, these lights will be replaced again by Gods light, which will last forever. Never again will there be darkness to help conceal the truth, or promote evil.
The lessor light, the moon does not originate its own light, but merely reflects the light of the sun. It uses the light produced by another. Satan is the lessor light as well. He used that which God has created, and he used it for his own selfish purposes.
The lights of the sky, the stars, though they are fascinating are very distant from us, yet they still serve the earth even at their great distance. They perform their task of decorating the night sky and providing the seasonal and monthly functions on the calendar. Though they are beautiful, they are empty masses of explosions with no life.
God makes it very clear that worshipping these sources of light is taboo. They are not gods, not creators or sustainers of life, but people all over the world throughout history have practiced the worship of the sun, moon, and stars. God created them all and God is rejected by those who worship them.
Through these first four days, human life has not been created. God has prepared the planet, planet earth, for the advent of man. One could wonder what the angels were thinking as they observed this slow and deliberate account of the earth's restoration. What was its purpose. The angelic conflict had run its course, Satan had been convicted and sentenced and appealed, questioning God's right to make such judgments and to carry them out.
God has clearly defined the light from the dark, God's viewpoint from Satan's. Satan has messed up the earth as well as the universe, Isa. 14. Now rather than dealing with the entire universe, God has set the stage on this tiny insignificant planet for the resolution of the conflict which Satan started.
Step by step God has been restoring the earth. He could have done all of this in an instant, but He did not. This revelation was to be given to mankind to clearly state and reveal Gods sole sovereignty and power and authority. And as time proceeds, His faithfulness and fairness in dealing with his created beings.
A lessor creation, man, will demonstrate the good of God (spiritual growth), as well as the extreme evil of Satan. And in so doing, man will be promoted to a position higher than the angels currently possess. God could not even trust His angels, Job 4:18. Perhaps if nothing had been done, all angels would have gone astray and to their own unfortunate oblivion. I am speculating on that of course.
Perhaps the creation of man had the impact of reinforcing the salvation of those 2/3 rd's of the saved angels, those that did not follow Satan. Either way we are here and the comments God has made regarding them is a matter of record. He would not reveal it if it were not so and were not for our benefit of knowledge.
The evening and morning bring yet another rotation on this planet and yet another demonstration of God's faithfulness. Do not worship at the foot of the matter in this universe, or views of evolution, for all life sprang forth in less than a day at its appointed time by God. Do not look around you and say that all of this is by accident. If it were so, then we are all mush and any morals would be arbitrary - the jungle rules.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
