Eze. 1:5-7

5 Also out of the midst [tavek] thereof came the likeness [damuwth] of four [arba] living creatures [chay]. And this was their appearance [mar'eh]; they [hennah] had the likeness [damuwth] of a man [adam].
6 And every one [echad] had four [arba] faces [paniym], and every one [echad] had four [arba] wings [kanaph].
7 And their feet [regel] were straight [yashar] feet [regel]; and the sole [kaph] of their feet [regel] was like the sole [kaph] of a calf's [egel] foot [regel]: and they sparkled [natsats] like the colour [ayin] of burnished [qalal] brass [nachosheth]. KJV-Interlinear

5 And within it there were figures resembling four living beings. And this was their appearance: they had human form. 6 Each of them had four faces and four wings. 7 And their legs were straight and their feet were like a calf's hoof, and they gleamed like burnished bronze. NASB

Taken from the presence of Israel in the desert and their formation as they advanced in any direction and as they rested when they camped. Ezekiel has a vision which symbolizes this formation, which also depicts the real and true throne of God in heaven, of which all earthly things are a mere copy of the real thing in heaven.

Heb. 8:5
5 who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, 'See,' He says, 'that you make all things according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.' NASB

When the Israelites moved or camped in the desert they did so in a specific formation. A formation which did not change.

The twelve tribes were formed with three in the front, three tribes on the right, three tribes in the rear and three tribes formed on the left. In the center of the formation was the Tabernacle.

It would look somewhat like this with the tribes represented by the 'pluses' and the Tabernacle in the center represented by the 'T'.

--------------------+ Dan (north - eagle) +

+ Ephraim (west - bull) + T + Judah (east - lion) + ---> direction of advance

------------------ + Reuben (south - man) +

I know. This is a rather crude representation, but that is the best I can do I think, by just using the typewriter. Not sure exactly how this is going to look when this gets uploaded to the Internet, but hope it is sufficient to give you an idea regarding the formation of the nation, Num. 10.

The lead tribe was Judah, which was a represented by the lion.
The lead tribe on the right was Reuben which was represented by the symbol of a man.
The lead tribe which brought up the rear guard was led by Ephraim, which was represented by the bull.
The left guard was led by the tribe of Dan, which was represented by the eagle.

As Ezekiel saw the vision coming out of the north, then he saw the tribe of Reuben first (the face of the man) with the others in their respective positions to the right - Judah, and to the left - Ephraim, and Dan in the rear.

Ezekiel of course saw the actual image of the throne in heaven after which the tribes of Israel were formed in the march through the desert. Their very formation taught principles of doctrine.

The angels each had legs like that of a man but with feet like that of the calf. They stood and did not bow or kneel. Their footing was solid firmness as portrayed by the round foot of a calf. The polished brass, indicates Gods purity.

They were all living beings, not mere images, not figments of the imagination, not idols. They all had the same four faces and the same four wings.

I think that this is enough for todays study. This is a rather long passage and there is certainly a lot of symbolism to explain, and then tie it all together.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
